I have 2700 miles on my 2005 XB12S and even with HD SYN3 20W50 the cooling fan runs every time the bike is turned off. It runs as soon as I hit the off ramp on the interstate on a 75 degree day and sometimes just cruising in town. Is there a fix?

It is normal. As you get more miles on the engine, the fan will gradually come on less and less. As for it coming on when you kill the engine, that is normal as well. The fan draws heat off the heads and will remain on until it is in spec.

Bulletman... other than get used to its uniqueness?

The fan will almost always come on when you turn the bike OFF.

Now while riding... there is a right-side air scoop (Al at American Sport Bike will know more) I think there are some modifications being made to it due to the heat from the header again get with Al. Hope it helps.

On the 75F days mine would run every time I got off the interstate. Now with it getting to 90F it runs on highway use at continued 3500-4K RPM use. Try running Mobil 1 15/50. It helps lower the fan use.

The "fix" is simple. Install a right side air scoop from Trojan. My fan has not come on once since my install.

And it looks great too!

Can't recommend it highly enough.

Good stuff and good luck!

the right side air scoop will only fit the 9 right? I thought I read some where here that it won't clear the headers on a 12 or is too close to the headers on a 12 so it is being redesigned for the 12.

Thanks for the info on the fan. The Trojan site shows the right intake for the 12 and 9. I'll check it out. Couldn't find the one on American Sport Bike. I have the parts to convert the rear to an "R" so it will be interesting to see if that makes a difference. Maybe I'll ceramic coat the headers.

I rode yesterday for several hours in 75-80 degrees. Fan never came on. Love that scoop!

The American Sport Bike prototype only fit the 9 due to header clearance, which is why it is back in tooling.

I have a 9, and have that prototype fitted. Looks neat, haven't heard the fan come on while riding with it, but it still always comes on when I shut it down.

Fan likes to come on a bit more on the highway in 90F temps. Groan. Florida is just to darn hot.

I love it when the fan runs after a ride. I can cut up lettuce and carrots for a fresh salad after working up an appetite during the workout of track day.

BruceLee......what about slow traffic conditions ? That is very impressive not to run on shut down ,beating the heat soak. Are you sure it is working, not trying to be a smartazz but it must still come on,please tell what conditions.Eric needs to put this on the 06' models,eh ?

Well, anything is possible but the fan was working fine the last ride before I put the scoop on. The fan would come on at the end of most rides that I took, sometimes in summer, while I was riding.

RE: conditions since the install. Most conditions have been encountered, ie hard hard run at varying speeds, 2-3 minute traffic lights etc. I have not been stopped for say 10 minutes or so but really, I would turn my engine off in that situation anyway.

So far, so good. I love the fact that the rear cylinder is cool enough to not need the fan. That has got to help engine life.

Erik, give us the scoop on the new models next year!

I THINK that they make the scoop for both bikes but I don't exactly recall. Click on their webpage and check it out!

Bruce, how long did it take for you to recieve the order from trojan. Just wondering since it is over seas. I actually just ordered one, i cant stand the way my bike runs when i ride it hard for an extended period of time, plus if im getting it that hot it cant be to good for it.

7-10 days if memory serves!

You will like the scoop. Remember you have to paint it.

What did you paint it with, just flat rattle can, or did you do it the pro way

I agree with Jasonxb12s. Removing the fan cuts the noise a lot. Say, has anyone else had an engine melt? Apparently that’s not covered in the warranty.

Our scoop fits both the 9 and the 12 with sufficient clearance for the headers. The bottom of the scoop is shaped for clearance.

Here is a (admittedly small) pic of one installed on the 12. This particular one is in carbon but we offer both this and fibreglass. : )

The install takes maybe 10 minutes including taking off the old one. Just use the hardware that is on the bike to mount the new scoop.

I used a spray paint from Pep Boys. I will look up the exact color and brand later and post!

Wouldn't it be a hoot if Eric did put a right side scoop on the 06's? I am sure you would be able to buy that much cheaper than the 200.00 version currently out. Just a thought. John

Your evil twin Norris?

Something that's crossed my mind. I wonder if it would be possible to install a temp sensor near the rear head to give us a temp gauge for that area. Also an oil temp gauge wouldn't hurt neither.
