ive been going through this problem for the past year on my bike.

sometimes when i start the bike, it will turn over, and then the power goes out, it will quickly come back on and the bike will start up but the clock is reset.

can anyone suggest a good place to start looking for the cause?

Loose battery terminal, ecm wire bundle cut through (near the battery terminal) and horn bracket (on a 9s) cutting through a wire.

An xb will do that even with a tight battery connection if the connection is not clean. Take the cables loose, scuff up the cables and the battery connection until it is shiny and put it all back together. That is the most common cause. If that doesn't work, then trace the cables.

If its ONLY at starting, I would suspect a bad contact/short in the housing with the starter button.

This happens to mine after a few short runs in a row in traffic.

by coincidence i had the same problem on my bike going on 2 weeks. Reepicheep diagnosed the problem with mine. Seat off, phillips to the batt. terminals, no problems.
