I have a 2003 XB9s.

I am OK with the performance but would like to hear a little more rumble from the exhaust.

Is there a way to modify the stock can for more sound without hurting performance?

Yeah, if your looking for a easy fix, the Drummer is a very good pipe, ship your old pipe and let Kevin perform his magic.

Well, if your feeling lucky and handy with the gas-axe and welder, you can chop it yourself.
or
The Jardine RT.1 is the only cheaper option.

Cut the three tack welds on the chrome tip remove it. Take a chop saw with a new blade and cut the can about 1/4 in behind the factory weld toward the back of the can, new blade so it will cut through the pipe in one chop. Take a sawzall and cut the pipe you will see when you remove the back of the can, on the left right next to the exit hole, and on the right on the left side of the bend. Weld the back of the can back on grind the weld smooth, re-tack the chrome tip back on assuring that sparks and slag from the tacks don't stick to the tip. reinstall and fire up. Enjoy your new rumble, and performance. On Deceleration the pipe will have cackle, so be aware some don't like this.

I know there are alot of Drummer fans on the board. I can't justify spending $400 to have my can modified. If I was going aftermarket I'd probably get a D&D and keep the stocker.

Hanses, did you do this mod on your pipe?

If you don't want to spend $400, then you sure don't want to spend $650!

I drilled 5 5/8" holes next to the stock outlet in between the outlet and the edge of the tip. There isn't any performance increase that I can feel but it did make it a bit louder, it was free and it took three minutes.

I did the drilling the holes thing between the stainless outlet and the "real" outlet. It did help it more on the freeway or higher revs since the overall outlet was larger. The sound was higher pitched similar to drag pipes but was not overly loud.

I ended up with a Drummer (regular one) after hearing one since its tone was nice and low. I have seen some mods on this board about taking out the middle pipe which opens things up but it could cause an imbalance in fuel/air mix.

Basically there are three pipes in the stock exhaust. It goes out of the headers, through the front, and then into an enclosed chamber in the back (I think). Then goes from that chamber down the middle to a second enclosed chamber in the front. Finally it goes to the back and out the smaller outlet which goes through the first enclosed chamber. By drilling the holes in the first chamber, it reduces the pressure in the can depending upon how many holes are made. However it is not a controlled air flow which makes this modification inconsistent.

I will say this...I had desnorkled, put in a 12 airbox, K&N Filter, and drilled about four 1/2" holes around the stock outlet and the bike ran decent except the idle would not be steady. I then got the Drummer and Race ECM on the bike and now it runs really well (smoother) and the idle drops right down quickly with a burbling and stays steady around 1100. I credit this to the "rebalancing" of the air/fuel mix to a known combination.

Are any of you with the OPS pipe still using the stock ECM? How does it run, any pops on when you let off the throttle.

OPS, K&N, desnorkeled, stock ECM ran great on my 12. popped a little on decel but i liked it. i know there are a few on this board that ran with this basic setup for over a year.

I've since added a cut up airbox and the TFI unit, trying to dial it in now.

Look in the Sponsor/Stone Mountain section, Clown and Odie have started a thread specifically for the Special O.P.S. pipe. sound files, dyno charts, etc. great pipe for the money! The sound is just mean, I was on the highway with it for the first time yesterday and it just rumbles, not overly loud for long hauls.

I have the special ops pipe. I love it!!! Heres a link to my web page where you can listen to the sound clip. http://www.geocities.com/calebvet

I currently have on my 9r the ops pipe, k&n, chopped up 12 airbox, insulated airbox, desnorkled, double platinum plugs, and the TFI. Man, it screams and sounds good. I definitely recommend purchasing the ops pipe.

Tpoppa- if your out by Westlake swing by and you can hear her. I'll even let you take her for a spin. Peace
