not sure if this is XB specific and belongs here or should be in the KV section ... here goes ..

getting ready for first fluid change on bike ..

Fram PH4967 filter
Mobil 1 15w50 (automotive)
Redline Lightweight shock proof gear oil

what do you .. the seasoned veterans think ?

Point of reference .. used to own a '67 Camaro with 383 and Muncie 4 speed .. used Redline in the gearbox and rear and have ALWAYS used Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles after break in ....

You might want to do a search on "Redline ShockProof" here, several people have noted issues with it in their primaries both XB's and older Tubers. As to the Fram, that is up to you, If you wish to go a bit less expensive, the Walmart brand Supertech filters have been found by a majority to be like the stock Buell filter, though I have had a couple come apart with the cardboard base of the Frams, so you might want to tear one apart after you use it to find out.

I've been using a WIX filter. Nothing special, just got it from local auto parts store.

Remember, the gear oil you use is also lubing your clutch plates, so be careful. I always recommend the Syn3 oil for both components, never had a problem thus far.

A lot of guys here have been using Mobil Full Synthetic Gear Lube, as have I, without any problems. At least in the Primary. Haven't tried it in the motor though.

Been through the mill here, and I am currently running Mobil 1 V-twin 20-50 in engine, HD Syn 3 in the trans/primary. I use the buell oil filter, geez it's only a few bucks, and it has at least one little feature not in the Wix, at least not the one I looked into, notice I said INTO, not at. At any rate you will find all kinds here, but I feel my bike performs best with these oils, shifts great, runs well, now (see hard starting/k&n & Race ecm thread for that info)

I use amsoil 20/50 in the engine and primary about 6.50 a quart delivered to my house I use the bosch 3311 prem oil filter 5.99 at your local auto zone. good results from this combo. \

Mobil 1 75w90 full Syn in the Primary is what I run.
Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50 in the engine. Readily available in my area I might note. If my dealer doesn't have a filter I go with the Walmart Supertech, the first two I took apart on the East Coast were just like the Fram, the 2 I have taken apart here in AZ were like the factory, just an FYI. Still buy the factory when its available at my local shop.

Jessicasdad--As for oil(s)that seems to be a never ending story,but could I talk you into using a Buell filter?The Fram #you gave(PH4967)is the same filter I use in my daughter's Celica.When I read that I could use this filter on the Buell,I thought"great,these are half the price",but when I held the two filters side by side,the Buell filter is a better filter,no question.It is heavier(more filter medium?)and there is what appears to be a check valve of some sort inside the filter at the bottom,that is not in the Fram at all.The Fram is fine for a car,but not for your Buell.I remember talking to a friend of mine years ago,who was a factory Honda mechanic.He told me,"nobody cares more about that engine than the people who built it,use factory filters"I own a Honda and a Buell--you guessed it

The fram filter uses a cardboard base where as the factory uses a metal base holding the filter media in place.

I use Redline 20W-50 in both the trans and engine with genuine Buell oil filters.

Thanks to all for the information ... was looking last night at Al's website and he has the filters for $6.95 .. not a bad deal .. I actually use the Fram X2 filters in our Suburban and Toyota Tacoma with Mobil 1 and that combination has worked out really well .. and I will be doing the oil and primary this weekend....

Factory filters 6.25
Is it worth saving a few bucks per year to run anything else?

As far as replacement filters go - I put enough miles on a year that I change it at least two or three times, if not more. No dealers within three hours drive/ride. If I want a stock filter I either have to plan way ahead and buy them when I am at a dealer and tote it around with me for the rest of the ride, or pay extra shipping. That's the biggest reason for an alternate filter to use. I can pick up a FRAM ToughGuard filter at a local parts store, and they have a screened over bypass valve and other extras that make it better than the regular FRAM filter.

You are aware that there's difference between the Mobil 1 automotive and Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50 ???

I have always used Mobil 15-50 in racecar motors, but have been advised to use the MC specific Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50 in air cooled MC motors.
