Hello guys and gals,

I recently found out my dealer will no longer be servicing Buells so I did the 15,000 service myself. I had a few questions about servicing the primary oil/chain. I don't want to get into what oil to use...to each their own.

1. I "rotated" the motor by taking out both plugs and then putting the bike into 2nd gear and rotating the tire...is this the right way to do this? The chain did move and I checked the slack...seemed a bit tight so I backed off on it.

2. I had the bike on a rear stand so the back wheel was about 2 inches off the ground. When filling the primary..does it matter if you fill via inspection cover or clutch cover? I filled via clutch cover since that is where the level was supposed to be checked.

3. While on the stand, I drained the primary oil and doing a search in the KV and checking my service manual it is not clear how upright the back wheel needs to be...it seems most people find exactly one quart is the amount to refill with. I had the bike perfectly level sideways but slightly up since the back wheel was 2" off the ground on the stand. Putting exactly one quart did not bring the level up to the bottom of the clutch cover where the manual says it should be so I added approximately 4-5 more ounces until I could at least see the oil through the clutch cover. Does anyone know exactly how high the level should be? There is a reference to a Rear Stand in the service manual that looks exactly like the one I have but what I don't know is how high the back wheel is off the ground if at all...this would affect how much oil to put in...

4. Finally I rode the bike a short while and realized the clutch was "grabby" at the point of full release. I re-did the clutch adjustment and now that is good (didn't slack the cable first). However my question is on the back side of the clutch cover there was a white foam type stuff on the backside of the cover...it was about the consistency of whipped cream and oily (smelled like the oil in the case). If too much oil is put into the primary I have heard that "other problems" can occur but I could not find anything doing a search as to what those other problems are. Is it possible putting 38-39 ounces of oil in the primary instead of one quart (32 ounces) is causing this foaming...she seems to shift a little bit louder than I remember but is fairly smooth. I am perfectly willing to draing and re-fill with only one quart but don't know what overfilling does to compare to what my bike is doing.

Lovematt-1-yes,you done good.The reason you rotate the motor is to check the slack in the chain in a few different places in its rotation.It may be loose in one spot,tight in another.Your adjustment should be at the chains tight spot.#2 I fill mine through the clutch cover,until the oil just touches the clutch diaphram spring(it looks like a big gear to me to tell the truth, but it's called a diaphram spring)The last time I changed mine it took just a bit under a quart of oil,but the level was at the bottom of that spring so I figure any more is overfilling it.(I read that overfilling the primary will cause hard shifting) #3That white foamy stuff you saw was probably moisture/water that got into the primary by way of the clutch cables cover.(learned about this on this site a while back)Seems water/rain gets in through the rubber boot that covers the clutch adjuster,goes down the cables housing into the primary.You see it as milky tranny oil,or that white spooge.I've taped the top end of that boot to the cable--so far so good.Hey Lovematt--I just re-read your post to see if I had gotten to all your questions,and I notice you said that you filled your primary to the top of the clutch inspection cover.The shop manual says to fill it to the bottom of that clutch diaphram spring,which is visible through the inspection cover,but I think you are overfilling it if you are at the inspection cover itself.Hope this helps!

Less is more with primary oil. Ditto adjust chain from tightest point, cold vs. hot check makes a difference. Change gaskets!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Good to know I did the chain adjustment right...just wasn't sure on that one.

That white stuff was ONLY on the backside of the Clutch Cover...I dipped a screwdriver into the oil and it was just like I poured it in.

I think I will drain the primary in next day or so and put only one quart in to see if that helps.

I would try no more than 2528 ounces, it's easier to add!

Looks to me from the picture in your profile you are going a little to far with reducing unsprung weight there...

No more than 28 ounces max. Try finding the neutral - if you are having difficulty, it's likely that you overfilled it.
