I've got 3400 miles on the CityX and am loving it but I have noticed something that suggests that something might be slightly amiss.

The bike is stock. I initially installed the race kit, but returned the bike to the stock set up about 2500 miles ago. I was told that a TPS reset wasn't necessary when the stock ECM was re-installed, but the service writer told me that they "did it anyway." Oil was changed at 1000 and 2500 miles...using 20W50...level okay. By highway speeds, I mean 55-70 mph on varying terrain, not 75-85 extended cruising on the slab.

My first observation regards the fan...it stays on...allot. I noticed that it was remaining on continuously [at least it seemed so] at highway speeds even in 60-70 degree weather. I don't recall the cooling fan running so much on my 03 XB9.

Perhaps related.... about an hour or so into a ride I notice that the engine starts running noticeably rougher and the idle speed increases 100-200 RPM.

If I take a 30 minute or so break, the bike runs "normally" for a few minutes, then starts running rough again.

I understand that an engine runs differently depending on ambient and engine temperature but the difference I am seeing seems a bit extreme....the bike I come home on at the end of an afternoon's ride on isn't the same bike I left on.

I find it hard to believe the engine is getting hot enough to skip a spark and I have never noticed the engine light being on. If it was skipping a spark, what would it feel like and how noticeable would it be? Could a sensor be giving bad information to the ECM, making it "think" the bike is running hotter than it is?

I guess I'll set up an appointment with the dealer, but will the bike need to be "hot" when they hook it up to the analyzer to accurately diagnose what is going on?


Any clues or suggestions....?

I think it may be an indication of your cylinder head temp sensor being amiss.
