I have 3 questions for the group about our fine XBs

1. Accuracy of our speedometers. When ever I roll up or down 1-5 I get passed like I am standing still. My speedometer reads 70 mph, but I have old ladies passing me! The only thing that holds me back is a Patrol Bike that is always on that stretch. Thoughts?

2. Pipes are discoloring blue around the exhaust. Normal for the XB? Rear cylinder more then the front.

3. Buell Pro-Series exhaust can… will it require repacking and how often?

Thanks Chad

Stryker, I too have thought about this speed thing. My bike reads a bit fast too. I first noticed it on the way home from the dealer on day one. My dad was following in his truck. when we got home he sarcasticly told me it's ok to do the speed limit. he was serious when he said I only hit 40mph. I saw the speedo hit 50 a few times. I later went out of my way to find and run past 4 different police radar signs and the bike read fast every time. I just left it alone. It helps keep me out of trouble.

Stryker, I'm pretty sure the road tests I've read on Buells all report the speedos as being pretty accurate, like maybe ~2% optimistic. Jap bike speedos are typically VERY optimistic, like 5% or more.

1. My speedometer reads about 1.5 mph high at 50, 2 mph high at 70 as indicated by my GPS.

2. Normal. Reddish purple on mine.

3. No, never.

1) Mine's off 4% ('03 XB)

2) Mine's blue just like yours

3) I hope it never needs repacking. It would have to be cut apart and welded back together!

My speedometer is showing a faster speed than actual...about 2-3 MPH at 35 and I imagine it would be around 5-6 MPH at highway speeds.

Pipes discoloring is mostly normal...as long as it isn't all the way down to the muffler! If it gets to the downward part of the headers...the bike might be running hot, or lean, or some other problem.

If you mean the Race can...I don't believe it requires repacking...I had one for about 15 minutes on my bike but it was too loud and not the right tone for me...got a Drummer instead and am very happy with that pipe.

Your talking of old ladies passing you on I-5 then claim your only going 70? Last time I checked, I-5 was a free fly zone for low altitude aircraft, I mean seriously, even when I used to drive it daily traffic flowed at 80...

I-5? Last time I was there, 80 got you run over on the on ramp! At 90, packs of cars were blowing by!

Thanks guys, I will continue to move at "traffic" speed. Area that I was referring to on I-5 is Olympia to Ft. Lewis, WA. It is patrolled by two/ three BMW police bikes. How do I know? My Fire Support NCO received a ticket for going 68 in a 60 on his GSXer. He was in military uniform about 500 meters to the Ft. Lewis Dupont Gate when he got tagged. No love for the military in the state of Washington… sorry got off the subject. Anyway, you all answered my burning questions of the day.
