I am in the market for a new bike, I was at the HD dealer the other day and had a demo ride on a Lightning 1200. I went inside and sat on the firebolts and really like the feel of them better as far as the seat and the handle bars go and I like the style better also. my issue is that I have found a 2003 Buell Firebolt XB9R with the pro-series race kit installed from the dealer. it has 4300 miles on it and the owner is asking $4500. I know the blue book value is at $6500 so the price seems right but is the XB9R gonna have enough power for me or should I look for a XB12R? |

Yes. I feel the 9R offers enough power. Heck, for $4,500, you can spend the difference on it that it would cost to get the 12R and go faster. |

I think for the price you could afford to up the cc's on the nine and have a shortstroke bigblock. Otherwise I would say look for a XB12. |

If you get a good deal on the nine, I say bore the crap out of it and you'll have a sweet machine... Of course, you could get the twelve and bore that too . |

get the 9 bore it and save yourself some insurance money by not letting them know its over 1kcc. fyi insurance for me clean record 450/yr if i wanted to get a 12r it would have been almost exactly 4 times that. not trying to hijack this thread but insurance is one thing some people like to take into consideration. |

Good point on the insurance. Personally, I bought my 9R because I was able to get it for the same price as you ($4,500). You really aren't losing money at that price and the 9 has been more than enough bike for me. |

$700/yr, "mostly" clean record, 12R. |

I like the 9 better because of the shorter stroke. It feels a little racier because it revs easier and higher. But then again, if you really dig the low end grunt of a 12, get that by all means. It really depends on what you like. |

Full coverage. $500 deductible. I live in a small town though, and keep it in a garage. |

Man you're stoked. I gotta fork out $1400/yr.and have a $500 deductible. But with my previous insurance co. my monthly premiums were almost $100/mo. more than my bike note. That's why they are my "previous" insurance co. |

For some odd reason it is well over $250 dollars less to insure a 12S than a 9R here. I reckon the suits in insurance figure low bars & a fairing make people ride faster & wreck. I just don't get it |

I've demoed 2 XB12Rs, 1 XB12S and 1 XB9R. I really didn't think the 9 had THAT much less power than the 12...but I also didn't feel that the 9 rev'd up THAT much quicker either. I like the idea of boring out the shorter stroke motor, the 9 also felt easier to ride at low rpms when you're making a turn from a stop or rolling through a green light to make a right hand turn. Buellers at the demo said that's just the lumpy nature of the 12, I'm sure I could learn to be smoothed with it but I did notice it. I was surprised I noticed the ever so slight weight difference between the 9 & 12 too. Again nothing major, but I'm usually horrible at picking things like that up. I'd say go with the 9 since that is an incredible deal on it (I'd say it's a crazy price anyway???). |

I have progressive too. After giving it some thought I started thinking it's due to where I live. I'm sure you always read articles in the bike rags about riding hyw 1 in nor cal. There's usaly some tidbit about making sure to stop in Pt Reyes. Well that's where I live & there is usally one or two wrecks per weekend. 99.9 percent of the time it's sportbikes. Squids & experienced riders alike come out here to see how well their bikes handle but don't think to go slow the first time & learn the road first. There's some tight sneaky turns out here. |

That's interesting because I WAS with Progressive right up to the time I purchased MY 12R. I called them from the dealer's to insure the bike and the price they quoted almost made me puke! Even the salesman looked worried cause he thought I might not be able to buy the bike. In the end I went with Geico. I was so pissed at Geico because I had gotten a "soft" quote not even two days prior which was way lower, yet at purchase time the price went up dramatically. |

Correction. I meant I was pissed at Progressive not Geico. Progressive tried to rape me with their exorbitant prices. |

1badxb - that's over my budget but thanks. when I got my two 2004 700EFI polaris sportsman atv's I called progressive and they were twice as much as the deal I currently have. I contacted progressive today for the XB9R and they told me $1800yr. what a joke, I went up to my insurance agent today to put up a for sale flyer on their postit board and got a quote while I was there, they told me $1053yr. with a $500 deduct. not bad but I kinda figured it would be lower than that but I guess it's cause I'm only 24 years old. if anyone is looking for a nice HD let me know it's a 1973 XLH custom build by me from the ground up.I have over 12K invested but will take $5500 obo.

In the end I went with Geico. How did you get your quote from Geico? I tried going to there website once, but I couldn't figure out how to tell it I wanted to insure a motorcycle. |

I want an XB##R, but I did not know if the $$$ for the 12s was worth it. I tested a 2005 XB9R at Daytona and fell in love with it, but I wanted to compare it to a 12. I just demoed a 12 and did not like it as much as the 9. The power on the 12 was down low in comparison to the 9. Though it made it very easy to wheelie, I don't want that when I'm leaned in hard on a curve. I also kept hitting the rev limiter on the 12, something that was not a problem for me on the 9. The 9 was noticeable slower to about sixty, but then it really felt strong enough stock to stay with the 12. It came down to the 9 has smoother power delivery which makes it easier to ride fast in the twisties. I will have to wait a bit before I can buy an XB and I plan to test ride them both again, but right now, I like the 9 more even if the money was the same. $8500.00 for a new 9, really makes it hard for me to justify the 12, especially since I have the M2 already in the stable for wheelies. |

Dude, That is a sweet deal on the 9R. I got my 03 9R with the race kit installed, 2K miles for $6500. I say jump on it. You won,t be disappointed. With the race kit the powerband is wider than with the Suzuki 1100 I had. Now to join the insurance hijackers...Full coverage for $360 per year through Progressive Drive. |

$208 a year, full coverage, $250 deductible. I am 25, clean record. Insurance is all a matter of location, location, location. If you live in a higher populated area your insurance will be higher, if you live in an area that has a high population and a lot of MC wreaks it will sky rocket. The only place you can compare insurance is with other riders that live in the same city as you. I live in Kansas City. How about everyone post where they live and then their insurance costs. |

I love my 9r! I got mine with quite a few miles on it and it still runs like a beast. As for insurance...360 a year thru State Farm for full coverage; 500 deduct, 100-300-100...etc. Edit: Columbus, Ohio (Message edited by butch_xb9r on May 02, 2005) |

My insurance agent said the "S" was for sport and "R" was for race. He pointed this out to Guaranty National and cut my payments in half on my 9S. |
