Bad new, as some of you know I have been looking at an XB9R that someone has listed for $4500. turns out it's a scammer who has other bikes listed as well, he is trying to get people to send money through western union and then he will ship the bikes which just happen to be out of state. man now I am bumbed out. but the good news is that I called a local HD/Buell dealer and they have a 2004 Buell XB9R in either battle blue or white for $6500 OTD. I am thinking of going that route then I know that the bike is new and has a warranty, bad part is that it won't have a race kit installed unless I buy it and have the dealer include it into the purchase. What do you all think, should I go with the new 2004 from the dealer or wait for a legitimate used model for cheaper.

I steer clear from vehicles on ebay unless the seller is close enough to me for me to go and actually look at it in person.

I'm too paranoid to send a large sum of $$$ for a vehicle that I can only take the seller's word on as to it's condition & Legitimacy.

I'm not mistrustfull of people. I just know how they are

i bought a cadillac on ebay from a major dealership in arizona and they misrepresented it and it was about a 6 month battle with them and every agency i could complain to, to get them to take it back

i would never buy anything major like that agian(ebay, or long distance)

i did buy from daves though with no problems, because of his reputation here

Yeah, DaveS is an exception. I WISH I could have gotten a bike from him but I needed a CA model. And even if he could get one for me, I'd never be able to go there to pick it up.

I've had good luck with E-bay. Now I'm in their 12 step program.

I bought my 03 Blast on E-bay, drove 4 hours to get it, got a hell of a deal and had a decent experience all around. The XB9S, I got from a dealer, got a hell of a deal and it was a much shorter drive.

And don't feel like the bike without a race kit is somehow defective. The race kit adds a little, but the bike works VERY well as delivered.

The money spent on a race kit would be better spent (from an improved bike performance standpoint) on trackdays, or even a trip to a place like Deals Gap.

My riding took two quantum leaps. The first (and biggest) was a trip to deals gap. Two days of linked turns, one after the other, letting me try all sorts of stuff until I really started finding and practicing what really worked.

the second (believe it or not) was a battletrax event here in Dayton. Not a lot of people showed up, and I was able to make at least 15 runs throughout the day, each timed and reported.

I need to get some buddies together, set up some simple timing apparatus, and set up a course on a parking lot somewhere. Not to compete against each other, but to simply measure our own performance objectively.

I got my XB9R off ebay. Was sold as consignment at a dealer about 60 miles from me. Got a good deal on it and I'd buy another bike through ebay as long as it was close enough to drive and get it. I'd never take the sellers word on something costing that much.

I bought bought my 03' XB9R on on eBay with 2050 miles for $4550. The owner had dropped it in their driveway and the exhaust, timing cover and chin fairing where slightly scratched. I've replaced the parts, bought new tires, and performed a tune up and maintanance. I bought it at the begining of Febuary this year and have 2000 miles so far without any major problems. I wanted to buy a used bike because I really enjoy working on it and I've had a new bike before and was always worried about scratching it.

We've bought 2 '98 S3Ts, 1 Blast, and 1 XB9R off ebay. All excellent transactions. The two S3Ts were fairly local. One from a Buell employee even : )

Steve - left out the Dnepr!

I wouldn't hesitate making more trips like those. We've been to Kentucky, Alabama and South Carolina. All marathon trips. All turned out better than expected.

johnk3 - what are you asking for the bike. I want a brand new one but my wallet and wife disagree with me. I am going to try to sell my sportster then I will have cash to buy what I want. unless I can find a bike for $5k or less then I can get a loan.

Different states have different emissions standards for clean air. Some government money for roads and infrastructure are given to the states is based on the air standards. States with large populations and industry have higher emission standards, like CA, to help keep levels low for more funding. Some states have yearly inspections you have to get where they check to make sure all the emissions controls are still on vehicles and are working. I live in Oklahoma, which is a rural state, and they quit the inspections a few years ago so I have no worries when it comes to performance mods.

Yep, CA has it's very own emissions standards. All California models must be equiped with a carbon canister (I think that's what it's called) a big black ugly thing that sits on the left side (when seated on it) of the engine on my 12S. At least on the R's it is hidden within the tailsection.
In the US there are two kinds of motorcycles. There are the 49 state models and there are the California models.

it figures. I live in Nevada and everybody and their poodle are moving here from CA. For some odd reason California can't fund the school system but can fund stem cell research.

Looks like I'll be able to chime in with my experience over the next few days. I just won an Ebay auction for an XB9S from Edison HD/Buell. They're in NJ, I'm in GA. I did my homework, researched the dealer here on Badweb and got the VIN to look up history. So far, Pete from Edison's been great to deal with.

Of course, you don't know the really good scams until you're already taken

sorry to hear 'bout that, Silver. There are good deals out there. Bonus! If you get your bike from a dealership that does remove some of the worry.

Any kind of major on-line, long-distance purchase use an escrow account. Think of it like a hostage exchange. You shouldn't release the hostages (Ben Franklins) until your demands have been met.

$6500 OTD is a good price for a new 9R. That's what I paid for my used '03 with race kit 5 months ago. Besides when you upgrade to the race ECM you will have a better idea of what you want out of an exhaust system. You won't be confined to the race can. Not that I feel that way. I'm satisfied with the mods done to the bike.

There is also some transport companies that will inspect the bike for a small fee before you make the purchase. On eBay just make sure to read what the seller wants as a deposit. If your worried about making the deposit contact the seller before the end of auction and see if you can come to some agreement. I was looking into working with a seller to have the transport company pay him at pickup if the bike met the description of the ad. When I won my XB I asked the seller before I bought it if I could just pay him at the time of pick up and he agreed.

I bought my S3 via ebay and it worked out OK. It had minor wreck damage, a salvage title and a low BIN. Seller had good, relevant feedback, and required a $500 deposit via PayPal. Bike was located ~500 miles from me. I figured worst case, I go, find out bike is junk and I have to try to get my deposit back. Paypal should refund money if bike is clearly junk. I also figured even if I lost the $500, the bike was enough of a deal where it was worth the gamble.

Luckily the bike was exactly as advertised, I gave the seller the cash for the balance, loaded in the truck, and a month later I had it licensed and on the road. Best deal I ever made.
