Ok I cant go off of someones word or knowledge of these motors (not to be crude but we only go off of whats in writing in the Military) because I need something in writing, if that is even possible. I got into a debate with an "old" harley guy this morning and he swears that our Buell motors (My Firebolt XB12R to be exact) are not made by harley nor do they share any "genuine" harley parts. Does anyone know where I can find something on the web, preferably from a Harley website, that states the motors are made by harley and share some of the same parts? Or am I wrong in my statements and I have to eat my own words? Thanks in advance. John

I think this will help ya:

On February 19, 1998, Erik Buell announced that he had sold almost all of his interest in the Buell Motorcycle Company to his business partner, Harley Davidson, Inc. Harley had been a minority partner in the Buell Motorcycle Company since 1993. As part of the acquisition, Erik Buell became Chairman and Chief Technical Officer (end of the sentence deleted). Jerry Wilke was named President of the new company.

The "Old" harley dude just has an attitude and is just trying to get your old goat. Play it back at him and say he was right and that Buell engines are in fact assembled in a combined Porsche/BMW engine plant in Australia and shipped to North America. Tell him this is part of a plan to eventually and secretly ship all Harley production off-shore and leave only the final assembly to the U.S. based Harley assembly plants.

Honestly, your Buell engine is assembled in the Capitol drive plant in Milwaukee right along with the Sportster engines. If he doesn't believe you, and if he is serious, just have him call up Harley and ask. Or tell him to take the tour next time he's here for a reunion or ride or event.

Even the lowly Blast motor is a Harley. When I had to replace the gaskets to stop the oil leak (it's an 01)The parts guy handed me the new upper gasket kit and it said sportster right on the box. he told me that all of the Buells use the same thing and thats how it comes. All of the parts fit with no modification what so ever kind of like they were made for it. He also told me that the Buell motors are built on the same assembly line as the sportsters and that the sportster engine was the basis for the Buell engine. Any difference came from a design modification for more performance.
I was even told that the Blast Engine was derived loosly from an old dirt track modification where by they removed the back jug and placed a plate over the hole so it could be raced in a certain class. I'm sure there were more mods than that but thats it basicly.

Yohinan...You simply have to post the guys reaction when he realizes the truth of the matter.

I love to see and hear the reactions of the hard core when they realize the relationship of HD and BMC.

Show him the "bar and shield" at the base of the cylinders on the left side of the motor.

"sportster engine was the basis for the Buell engine."
Flip that and it will be more accurate.

The old XL was the basis for the old Buell... The new Buell (XB) is the basis for the new XL.

I cant post a picture of his face however I can describe what happened. I printed out one of the links that was posted and made him read it. He got done reading, gave a good 10 second pause, then said, " Well all the guys at the Harley dealership that work on my bike told me Buell motors were not made by Harley. And I never heard of Harley buying out Buell either." I felt soooo good. Wonder if he is going to tell all those Harley "techs" at his servicing dealership that work for Harley they dont know what they are talking about. Too funny I say. Wish you all could have seen his face, he looked depressed. John

So now I just have to ask this:
If you go to www.buell.com and click on dealers, is his Harley dealership listed as a Buell dealership? I'm thinking some education might be in order regardless.

ps, and the next step would be to get him into one of them Buell dealerships, not to rub his nose in it, rather to get him to take a test ride. Once some of those hardliners figure out it's an engine they're comfortable with it doesn't take much to get their curiosity going.

All I can say is that the Dutch General Director of Traffic Control is not supposed to lie:
Harley Engine in Buell
