Ok well I'm getting out of the Army after 8 1/2 years and 3 deployments, so my bike will be shipped home on the 5th of May. What should I do when I finally get it back. It is going from Hawaii to Florida and they said it will take about 1 1/2 months or so.

I figure changing the oil would be good (I'm 200 miles from that anyway) and the fuel will be completely drained before shipping.
What I;m looking for is tips and things to watch out for.

remove your battery as well, or at the very least disconnect it or it will probably be dead before you get it back. I don't know if they will allow you to keep oil in your motor. Sometimes they want them dry for shipping. If you do get to keep oil in it make sure it is fresh oil, not acidic old stuff. Not sure how they are transporting your baby, I wish you luck.

Thanks, the rule here is if it has no leaks you can keep the oil in. I checked my manual (I write down when I change the oil) and it's only been about 850 miles since I switched to mobil 1. Is that fresh enough or should I just do it again?

Aaron,

When I brought my bike over from the mainland, I went about 15 miles once the reserve came on. Told them there is no way to completely drain ALL gas due to fuel in the frame. I disconnected the battery and taped up the ends. The packers pretty much said the same thing about the oil... just so long as there are no major leaks. That was about it.

I told them I did not care about anything else in the house, my bike is my baby and could they please take care of her. They put it in crate all by itself and put so much packing in it, when they opened it up here it took 2 crates to take it all away. If you do it now all you have to do is run to the gas station to fill up and your off(once you connect the battery cables)

Hey Shawn...
Was good to hook up with you that Friday and finally get to hear that loud drummer. My stator took a so I'll be out of a bike. Hopefully be up and running this Sat for a Sun ride.

For the PCS move I would drain it and disconnect the battery. Make sure you take photos of your bike, cause the movers don't give a rats about your stuff. That way if there is any damage you can claim it. Good luck!

I never shipped a vehicle for any of my CONUS PCS moves - always rode/drove it. I'd never let the knuckleheads I've seen moving household goods ship my bike if it meant that much to me.

Too bad about that little Pacific Ocean thing preventing you from doing the same. There isn't a ferry or something between Hawaii and California, is there? If there was, I'd jump at the chance for a cross-country ride like that.

Congrats and thanks for 8.5 years of service!!!

As far as the bike is concerned, I would remove anything that could easily be broken (ie mirrors), remove the battery(in case of leaks or breakage, or them riding it) cover all bare metal parts with wax or a light machine oil. When you get it home just go over the whole bike, make sure all bolts & axles havent been loosened for anchor points. Inspect the tires for proper inflation and if any oils have been spilled on them. Take some pictures to compare to if there is any damage in shipping. Change the oil, put gas in and let her buck!!!

May want to take the batt out of it completely. I am a C130j loadmaster in the air guard. I have had a few batteries in hummers puke after climb out. Hate to have batt acid on your bike. Good luck.
