Just installed a race kit on my XB12S (under 1000 miles). Everything went fine, no problems, installed the ECM in the dealer's lot and had the TPS reset.

Bike runs great, no popping on deccel, BUT, I still don't like the exhaust sound !!! The race kit is louder, but the motor just doesn't feel or sound "crisp" right off idle.

When I "blip" the throttle the darned thing seems to "stumble" most of the time. It's not really bad, it's just that the motor doesn't have that "crisp" responsive racebike sound when you blip the throttle.

Is there a solution to this ???

While I'm on this subject, I would also consider going to another exhaust if I can find something with a "deeper" tone - especially if there's a way to get around what I describe above.

Any ideas ???

Thanks very much,

Emery

I like my Jardine RT one. I think it's got a deep rumble to it. I know a lot guys here swar by Drummer and D&D. D&D is a bit pricey for me though.

I run a Drummer after running the race pipe. The tone is lower and not as "raspy". The response is much better off idle and through the entire rev range.

Find the Stone Mountain HD button in the sponser section. I have personally heard the Special Ops pipe that you can get through them. Man it is mean. Best sounding pipe that I have compared to-race muffler, drummer, jardine,D&D etc.... Only pipe I havn't heard in person is the Force exhaust system. MHO.
PS-blipping the throttle will cause plug fowling, I found out the hard way that these motors don't like it very well.

I went from a race pipe to the Latus. It sounds much deeper and crisper than the race pipe (way louder too). I believe it produces a little more power and better throttle response as well.

"what does blipping the throttle mean??"

Sitting at a light, clutch pulled in and you "blip" the throttle.

Most "hi-perf" vehicles have a "crisp" off-idle response, my XB does not. When you "rev" the motor (slightly), it "stumbles" a bit (70% of the time) and then the RPMs take a while to "settle" back down to idle speed.

It may be normal, but it's very annoying, for all it's performance, the motor feels more like a street motor than a race or performance motor.

Another way to explain it is, it feels/sounds like the motor has a big, heavy flywheel & clutch. Doesn't have a "crisp" or "revvy" feel or sound.

I'm probably looking for something that can't be found, just not "in love" with the way this motor feels and sounds at idle and off idle.

BUT, I am VERY happy with it's performance and handling.

Thanks again,

E

Eexb,
just do a search for cut airbox and limit it to the xb board for the last 100 days and you will find more info that you can go through. Basically, you cut the middle piece out and throw the rest of it away. Then install the middle piece on top of a K and N air filter and use a piece of foam to hold it down. You can also bolt it down. Works great!!!

D,

"Basically, you cut the middle piece out and throw the rest of it away."

I get it, did that on my V Rod - we called it "running topless".

Can I assume there's no need to do a TPS reset if I have the race ECM ???

Thanks,

E

Eexb, no need to do a TPS reset if you are just cutting away your airbox. You will be surprised at the difference it makes. Odie

After installing the race kit, you need to let the computer relearn. You have to ride for something like 10mins at 3000 to 3500 rpm. You will notice a huge difference in cold starting and throttle response. It also gets rid of the 4000 rpm flip over backwards wheelie in 1st. Even though it may feel stronger, it has a HUGE dip until you perform the fuel mapping relearn. Your fuel mileage will go up too. I will still sound like SE slip ons, but you will have crisper throttle response.
