OK, let me start off by saying i've been lurking for quite a while, and you guys are always full of good information, and are very helpful. That being said, I'm an idiot. I've got a 2003 XB9SL, and the rivets wore through on the timing plate cover thing. I opened it up, and tapped the inner timing cover plate to allow for the cover to be screwed on. no problem there. Where my problem comes in is with my tinkering disease. When the timing cover was off, i read the word "Advance" on the timing adjustment, and like a moron, moved it a little. Apparently, I didn't get it tight, because when I went for a ride after that, it moved around a little. I think I got it back to right where it was, but I'm not for certain. The bike runs good, feels a little "rougher", but I also put a K&N and removed the snorkel between rides. So my questions are this: 1) Will the K&N and removed snorkel make the bike feel a little "rougher"? and 2) How do I go about setting the static timing (what do I need, what should it be set to, etc)? Sped214 Hmmm, wonder why no has welcomed you to the board? I look at it frequently to see if there is any new tidbit of information, but don't post a whole lot. That being said, welcome aboard. As for the snorkel, I pulled mine...cut it about half-way down, then reinstalled it so there would not be a gap between the base plate and the frame/tank. I have not noticed any difference in the engine...certainly not rougher. Maybe I just expect performance and go for it! As for static timing, cannot help you there. I am guessing with all the electronic stuff nowdays, and on the XB, you need to put it on a computer. We have some real electronic wizzards on the board though who can advise you better than me. Sped214, Welcome to the board!!! If you changed your filter and removed your snorkle and it is running a little rough you need to run it at 3200rmps for like 10 min or so for the ECM to learn the new set-up. Hopefully this works. If not... setting up the timing is another story I think ( I know someone will correct me if I am wrong or has another way) but your going to need a timing light. Try the running it for 10 minutes and if that does not work repost and I'll look at "resetting your timing" in the manual. Shawn | ||

Thanks for the replies. Seeing as it's been in the shop more than it's been ridden due to oil leaks (crummy dealer, long story), I haven't had it out for ten minutes, let alone for 10 mins at a certain RPM range. I'll give that a try though. If you could look in the manual for me (haven't gotten mine yet) on the timing, that would be great, I've got a timing light... |
