Hey all. My speedo died after leaving the post office yesterday. Worked fine until then. The needles still do the the sweep when the ignition is turned on, but no speed indication. I removed the sensor at the trans and cleaned it (it was basically clean anyway), no luck. The tech thinks the sensor may have gone tango uniform (teets up). Anyone else with this problem? Thanks and ride safe.

mine went "tango uniform" 3 times before I finally went through the insanely easy effort of calling Buell customer service to say WTF? They were great...even tho my 9R was out of warranty they shipped the part to my dealer and covered all parts/labor costs to install it

Thanks. The parts guy said it was a discontinued item and did not know what the new part number was. I'll check it out.

Yep, if the speedo still does the sweep, the sensor went. I lost mine twice, each time soon after I had hit the rev limiter. The new part should take care of the issue.

Just for the record, there was a chronic speedo sensor problem (unregulated input and voltage spikes), and there is an updated part that fixes it.

BUT... the 9s was the one bike that did NOT have that problem, it had a regulated 5v supply to the sensor from the get-go.

Not to say yours has not failed, just to say that it was not the failure scenario you will see all over the board here.

Check the wiring for breaks and shorts, and check the connector. If that fails to find the problem, just replace the part, any of them should be safe in the 9s (with it's 5v regulated supply to the sensor).

Its the tubers, the blasts, and the 9R's that have the unregulated supply problem, if one of those folks loose a sensor, they should not put the old style back in without some sort of regulated 5v supply.

Like Fed, mine went south too on my '03 XB9S. I got a new one from DAVES, and it has been doing fine since. I hit the rev limiter a lot...does not seem to be in my scenario for its failure. Mine went out at about 4,400 miles.

XB9srider...I think you have figured it out now...it is the sensor. Replace it or have it replaced if it is under warranty.
