They are kinda 'spensive.

For the money, I'd rather invest in 4 days track time

Besides, they are upshift-only. I have had to race without a clutch hand before (could only do 3 downshifts per lap with the clutch - plus the start without tearing out stitches) - the XB tranny will shift "clutchless" if you really need to - and do it pretty fast - though it can be hard on it if you're sloppy (can happen).

Personally it may make more sense on the start or drag racing than in the twisties. Gaining a 100 milisecond advantage with each shift plus keeping power to the ground just that little bit longer is good but yeah, expensive.

Those shifters DO make clutchless upshifting easier on your tranny though.

Put the money into suspension (about the same cost as re-valving and new springs for your forks)

Personally, for drag racing - yeah, roadracing - only if you're in the top 10% of your class and are straining to get every advantage you can. (doesn't mean I don't want one - it's just that I'm spending the money elsewhere)

I run a Techtronics Quick Shifter on my 1995 Ducati 916. My friend who owned the 916 originally bought and fitted it himself a few years ago.

Back then it was the first quick shifter from this company set up and run by one genius guy. Pretty much a small step past prototype form when my friend bought it new which lead to the company sending him a slightly better modified version of the shifter rod to correct the sensitivity of the micro switch a few months later.

The genius guy (I forget his name for now) was bought into and the company has boomed. The product though still similar in operation has advanced technologically in the past few years. I know this because I spoke to the guy after trawling the net to find him when I first got the 916. I wanted to know how to set the thing up, which turned out to be simple once I had the info. Turns out that the original Techtronics like mine is where most all of the Super Bike race teams got their quick shifters from, and still do. Some GP teams too.

Ok I absolutely rave about the merits of the 916 and I don't have to exaggerate. Those that might wince about its extremities as a race focused machine, so what. Get with it or buy something that suits you better. Frankly though, and I've ridden a lot a lot a bikes over the years from Suzuki GT 750's to Bonneville's to GPZ 1100'S and then to the modern era such as Blades, R1's, Gixxers etc etc but not one of them impresses like my 916 ever does. I know this has a lot to do with how blindingly raw yet sophisticated the 916 is a champion of the black top. Its ability to run circles around more powerful bikes and that fact that it's a V twin of much much power and un-seemingly linear unstoppable revs all the way to the limit and that might be the greatest thing about having it have a quick shifter because I tell you there is simply no stopping it.

Without a shadow of a doubt it is the single most efficient mod my 916 has in terms of power. The Termi's. The eprom upgrade. The slightly lower gearing. Whatever. That quick shifter will keep my early 916 hanging on the coat tails of damn near anything on two wheels built perhaps excepting the latest machines getting up past 150bhp. It really is that significant especially on the open road. In the twisties man I tell ya it's a fantastic leveler only beaten by the size of your own balls. Simply nothing will gain or lose on you significantly unless they too are running a quick shifter.

Buy one. It's simply the cheapest and fastest way to go, well, fast I guess.
