Hey guys,
Just bought a brand-new 2003 (yes 2003) XB9R on Thursday the 14th. So far I'm having a great time with it and it has 470 miles on it already (when I test drove it, it had 12 miles on it. The rest are from me). One little thing I noticed though, sometimes when starting from a full-stop, the engine will "pop", sounds almost like a backfire, and then it almost dies. It hasn't quit yet in this situation, but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue. I have not modified the bike at all, and I am using the dealer-recommended Shell V-power 93 octane gas.

Thanks!

It may be an idle that's too low...

Aside from that, are you blipping the throttle or whacking it open from an idle?

What is the idle set to?

It idles steady at 1000 RPM. I'm not whacking it open, I do rev it a little as I let out the clutch. I couldn't reproduce the symptom on demand if someone asked.

beleive it or not, that 50rpm can make a difference, idle should be set from 1050-1150. Look into the purchase of an XB12 inner airbox cover for a 2-4hp gain for roughly $35 : ) It is also a stock item on the '05 9's : D

Cool Wycked, I'll look into both those things. Thanks!

I'm going to the dealer this weekend to pick up some stuff, and to get one of the pop rivets holding the Firebolt emblem on the crankcase cover redone, its coming out. I changed the oil/filter and trans oil for the first time tonight, at 540 miles. Since the break-in is finished, I decided to take it out and finally see what this thing will do. I tell you what, that bike scared the crap out of me. I could not believe how quick it was! Its still bone stock!

My technician explained to me that the most common cause for this is the race chip (even though you say your bike is stock?)He says that especially playing with the throttle (blipping) tends to confuse the chip - I broke the habit and within about a week the problem was solved. I'm not sure if the stock chip also "learns" - If so it would make sense that this is a likely cause.I also found that my Buell really doesn't seem to like Shell V-Power very much.I also stay away from leaded petrol - My tech tells me the Fuel sensor dislikes lead - I would be interested in hearing some other opinions in this regard.

Raboobee you need to update your profile so that we can have an idea of where your located. Using leaded fuel will destroy your O2 sensor which would be a bad thing. Yes blipping the throttle alot like is habit with a carburated bike can cause issues, but the most common cause of the above issues is low idle speed as most of the HD techs think "sportster engine/sportster idle" which is down around 900rpm.

Tech is correct, don't put any leaded fuel through your bike, it will destroy the 02 sensor (not immediately but a couple of tanks of it would maybe do the job), then the bike will run really bad and you'll have to buy a new sensor. He's also right about blipping the throttle, stock ecm's included.

Indy, I'd be inclined to just ride it for a while, if the problem persists take it back under warranty.

Forgive my ignorance guys, I wasnt sure what was meant by "blipping". Thats exactly what I was doing. I called the dealer and we walked through it and figured it out. Thanks alot for the input though!

Indy bueller,
Where are you at in Indy? I'm a plainfield resident and have been seeing a white bolt cruisin around that I haven't seen before. Is that you? It's great to see some fellow hoosiers on this board! Welcome!
