While at BikeWeek one of the Guzzi reps was spinning me a tail of how they were trying to get this model cleared to race but the AMA changed the rules to keep them out. "Sure whatever you say." I like it anyway.

It's beautiful. When I bought my '97 S3 I gae Guzzi a real hard look. At the time their engines didn't make as much torque or bhp as the Buells. Several years later I looked again, and it hadn't changed. Is it still true?

Poseur bike. I saw one at Laguna, and it couldn't even come close to qualifying for the race...oh, yeah, the Buell racers not only qualified well in Formula Extreme, they would have qualified for World Superbike!!! But of course it must be cooler; it's made in Italy, not a pathetic American bike (eeeWWW)

Looks like they set the start of a pretty motorcycle on top of a really ugly one and decided it might sell. I've never been a fan of twins mounted like that though, so that's probably why.

Also... Why wouldn't you put the carbs in the front and the headers in the back? Wouldn't that make a LOT more sense?

I talked to them at the show here (Long Beach) - said that 2 dozen race only were coming into the US.

They're still technically FX legal - the motor is pushrod - but it's HEAVY!!

Sad to see you say that anony.

Guzzi in fact through demand have brought the MGS to market as a track only bike. Type Approval for whatever markets would have brought prohibitive production costs and performance would have suffered accordingly if the MGS were to have made it as a road going production bike. Consequently it would never have seen the light of day had it not been Guzzi's desire for it to remain anything but a prototype. At least as a track only small production run the MGS does actually get to exist.

It's worth noting that whilst the MGS might be something a little special - and breathed on heavily compared to Guzzi's usual standards it doesn't pretend to be anything like a Formula Extreme race machine. Hell it doesn't even have a race fairing. What it actually does is the complete opposite to that. The MGS allows the ordinary folk to spend their cash on a machine that's specifically built for track day fun. The emphasis being on fun.

We'd be fools if we couldn't see the MGS makes the motorcycling world a better place with its presence. To knock it as a poseurs bike and offer lap time comparisons to a racing Buell shows a certain amount of ignorance and perhaps even bitterness simply because you favour Buell.

Incidentally and not wishing to start an argument on the matter, I'd like to see those Buell Laguna lap times myself. You say they'd have put Buell into a qualifying position for WSB? Brag away please. This is exactly the info I need to trade over the pub table with my Jap riding buddies.

Just for the record. I too have seen the MGS close up.

Rocketman,

For AMA FX Qualifying Lap Times...

http://home.ama-cycle.org/prorace/raceres/rr/cres.asp?cls=fe&snct=p6250&type=q&y ear=2004

For WSB...

http://sbk.perugiatiming.com/pdf_frame.asp?p_Round=USA&p_Anno=2004&p_Manifestazi one=07&p_Gara=01&p_Sessione=Q4A&p_Stampa=RIE

Looks like the last place WSB qualifier ran a 1:31.07 where Mike Cicotto on his FX Buell ran a 1:30.91. Interesting for the pub talk for sure.

Who cares what it'll do at the track? It is just a sexy bike. So sexy, in fact, that I added it to my photo slide-show screen saver. But in all fairness, I still have way more pics of Buells than any other bike.

That Guzzi does look good in person but when you talk to them about power and weight, they start getting pretty quiet.

Jean-Marc Arechiga was doing booth duty for Aprillia USA and Guzzi at Long Beach. I know him and his wife (Britt) from racing here at Willow Springs. Jean-Marc races a big 'Priller here at Willow.

You get different opinions when you actually race against the guy you're talking to in the booth.

Hey, c'mon! At least the Guzzi had a better time than the Harley XL883 (is that a Sportster?!?)

One thing that surprised me was the Ducati 749R--I know it's as much the rider as the bike, if not far more, but still...after all the hype about the Duc I would have expected more.

Gotta say, though, I'd still love a chance to ride an MGS-01. I think it'd be a fun bike--not that my Buell isn't fun (that's the main reason I bought it--it's fun to ride).

headers in front to take advantage of cooling, in the dim dark past

in that bike, I"m not sure I'd want to have the headers right up close and personal like to my knees

all bikes are good, I think -- some better than others for particular riders -- I'm guessin the owners of that Goose will be very pleased with it, indeed

Thanks Blake.

From what I would surmise there's another second or more in reality between WSB and Buell FX at Laguna. Surely the Ducati 999RS or Praia, or both, were off the pace during that session.

Never the less it's nice to see a Buell FX posting those kind of times given WSB isn't that far behind Moto GP at some tracks. Wow! Reality strikes.

No doubt it is rider governed. Put me on the lead bike and see what lap times it runs. LOL

Says a lot for the AMA FX racers who are ahead of the qualifying time cutoff for the WSB race though. Some may have even made the cut for the AMA Superbike race, which I believe was even faster yet, apparently due to tire considerations?

I'm cheering for Neil Hodgson this year in AMA SBK. You just can't help but love the guy. Mladin needs some humbling. Whoever one is rooting for, both AMA SBK and WSBK are looking to be fantastically competitive this year. Gotta like that! : )

Care to guess on who will take the championship in WSB?

Back on topic... : ] (BAD custodian!)...

I saw that sportster and Guzzi lapping Laguna Seca. It sure was fun to watch and listen as they went bellering by. Bummer they weren't able to qualify for the race. Apparently the field is limited to the top 20 entries. I don't understand that. There were a lot more that were within 10% of the fast qualifying time. Or is the cutoff not 10% over pole-sitter's lap time?

Gee, I have a rule book. But who needs that when we have José? : )

Buell FX bike was four seconds off the WSB pole, same difference as Proton KTM off MotoGP pole at Estoril at the moment. I have to say I'm impressed by Cicotto and Barney and the Buells...

WSB.

Those Suzuki's are going to be hard to beat this season. Corser is obviously superb but I always see him as having a thorn in his side regarding consistency over a full season. Having Kagayama as his team mate must motivate him and won't make it any easier and we have seen him lose a championship previously under similar circumstance. Both the Suzuki guys must be favourites.

Chris Vermullen can't be far off either. The Fireblade is well capable and right now is dominating the first two rounds in BSB. That's four race wins never mind the placings too. Vermullen is hungry and has aggression to beat anyone.

So where does this leave Ducati? I'm not sure about Toseland. He appears inconsistent based on last years championship, but then so did everyone else until the final rounds. It's common knowledge though that Ducati have their work cut out this season with the pace of the Suzuki in particular, but Ducati will no doubt have something up their sleeve. Hopefully Toseland will find his pace soon enough after an injury laden start to the season and I'm sure he knows he's not the only fast guy on a 999. Do I rate his chances? Only if he gets on the pace in the next round or two otherwise playing catch-up to those Suzuki's will prove impossible.

AMAmerican Sport BikeK.

Hodgson's 2nd at Daytona was spectacular. Me, I always thought Walker was the man when it came to the two of them after we saw them both battle it out for those three great seasons in BSB, but it seems the luck always ran with Hodgson and not Walker. May his luck continue for America. It would be great to see him take the fight to you guys.............................and beat you

Proton KTM.

Shakey Byrne has great enthusiasm for MotoGP. He's one of those racers who's happy to be on the grid no matter what the machine underneath him. He earned great respect as I understand it at Aprilia for his efforts to develop his ride. A motorcycle mechanic by profession in the past he's use to wrenching on his privateer bikes in the back of a van on Saturday nights pre race day and I'm sure that's part of his attraction to guys running teams further down the field in MotoGP. He can develop a ride.

Last year Shakey was on the Aprilia which was at the end of its development. On the Proton KTM he's at the start of its development and that must surely motivate him more and I hope both he the team and KTM do well as the season progresses. One thing is certain. He'll give it his all.

There's another great thing about Shakey's racing. His rise to success in BSB was nothing short of spectacular. From privateer to Champion to racing in MotoGP inside of 3 seasons is cracking stuff indeed. In fact it's as good as a Buell FX only 4 seconds off WSB pole.

Interesting insight there Rocketman. heheheh... Gotta put a space between the AMA and SBK, but if you don't, I'm sure Al won't mind. LOL.

BTW, your man Hodgson is as much if not more up against an Aussie in Matthew Mladin and a Canuck in Duahmel as he is against any American rider.

Me? I'm rooting for Hodgson cause he's cool and I like the Duc, but I'll also be cheering hard for Ben Spies, my neighbor from Longview, Texas and former CMRA racer at Oak Hill Raceway. c ontent

Go Buell racers in FX!

I don't know who to root for in WSB other than Toseland. Not looking too good for him at the moment though.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a copy of the official 2002 WSB DVD. That last race between Edwards and Baylis truly is epic. Both amazingly close back and forth competition as well as clean hard nosed racing. WAY better than what we recently saw at Jirez, but that was good stuff too, at least entertainment wise.

I'm already way too stoked about Laguna Seca and the MotoGP round there in July.

I see the Michael Csyz entry won't be making that event. rolleyes Read about it in CW. Ego much? Apparently he's very proud of their slipper clutch. Oh brother.
