In another thread you mentioned removing the Low Beam "Dangley-Dohickey thing" How did you do that?

Are you talking about the half moon shaped thingy?

If so you'll need to remove the front fearing and then start disassembling the headlight housing. I believe you remove a total of eight screws and then you will have access to the bulbs and that half moon thing that gives the headlights the puss filled eyeball look. If these instructions are a little confusing, let me know. I took that thingy off my bike about a year ago. hope this helps.

As far as I can see, that is the only difference between the low and high beam (besides the aim). The dohickie is very obvious once you take the light apart. I believe it is held on by a single screw.

So is the purpose to not blind people coming the other way? I can't see far at all going thru these back country roads due to only half the light hitting the road.

Firewhirl, I believe that's right. Not to blind people and maybe the dot required it, who knows. I haven't taken mine out yet but I"m going to.
It reminds me of the 'skip shift' deal on my pontiac:if you're not doing enough rpm it makes the manual tranny go from 1st to 4th, 6speed tranny. But it's built so a simple plug in and/or a couple of resistors bypass it. They did it for the mileage tests and made it easy to defeat it, which everyone does...

The low beam lamp on the "R" models have a plate inside the lamp to restrict the amount of light coming out of the low beam lamp. Like putting your hand across teh top half of a flash light. removal of this plate provides more light

I'd keep the restrictor on the R's, it's rigged so that oncoming traffic sees a "flashing" light. Really it's them being in and out of the beam as you go over little bumps. You've seen headlight modulators on BMW's right? Instead of taking out and losing this attention-getter, I put in a 100 watt H3 bulb!

Do you have any part numbers or recommended Mfg 100W bulbs?
Wonder if Sylvania has something for the "R" or buells? I will do some checking.

The plastic on the headlight assembly may not withstand the heat generated from a 100W bulb. If someone knows for sure, please chime in.

I was thinking the same thing as Chainsaw. I have read of others on different bikes who had melting problems when placing high wattage bulbs.

OK Fire, Chain, and Truk, I'm no expert, but here's my setup: '04 XB12R, with Sylvania 100-watt H3 bulbs on both low- and hi-beam. They aren't Silverstar's, because those only seem to come in 55-watt versions. Got my bulbs at Pep Boys for $(can't remember, but under 10 each). I've had it this way for months and havn't blown a stock fuse yet. Burned one bulb, but I think it was vibration. Havn't looked at the restrictor lately but I assume it's still intact 'cuz the light pattern is still good.

Since the restrictor keeps the low-beam from being seen at all when going downhill, I run the hi-beam during the day, and I'm told that the hundred-watter is un-ignorable! Good.

P.S.- Have any of you seen a thread where I can find a good kit to turn the signal lights into running lights?

Around $200 for that system. Pretty clean connection, though. Would need different indicators also.

ironmachine.com has the 100 watt bulbs - I ran them in my bike all summer (low and high). No melting at all.

Nadz...no need to spend that much.

A simple turn signal integrator wired properly will do the same thing. I've got a buddy who probably has 100 of them (used to make them) he's selling for like $18, so they're cheap enough.

It's a simple 4 wire system - input, output, interruption, and ground. Tap into the running lights for you input, connect the turn signals themselves into the output, and connect the turn signal wire from the bike into the interruption.

Turn signals will be on all the time unless blinked off by the turn signal from the bike.

i also have the 100w bulbs(both high and low) from ironmachine and i have been running them for about a year without any problems.
