I was adjusting my steering bearing play this weekend and torque too hard on the stem pinch fastener and cracked my upper fork clamp. I called the dealer and a new one is $120 bucks. I saw some after market option at American Sport Bike that has a different offset and is made from Billet Aluminum. There is also a Superbike bar conversion. I was just wondering if anyone has tried these bars and what they thought. I would post the links but I keep getting an error when I try to post.

The billet aluminum triple clamp is made by Heli Modified also know by Heli Bars. I have their clamp on my 12R and I like the small adjustment it made in riding position. Their clamp seems expensive, but once you look at all the machine work that went into it, you have to ask how did they do that for ONLY $300. Nice part!

Thanks for the input. I was interested in how the feel was with the riding position. I've also seen some wrecked bike on eBay for sell that the Upper Fork Clamp breaks in multiple spots and increases the chances of it hurting other parts of the bike. I feel that the stock cast piece broke too easily and the billet clamp looks a lot stronger and cooler. Oh, how tall are you Gowindward?

That pinch bolt is there simply to hold the cap bolt from backing off so doesn't need much torque, it doesn't clamp to the steering stem like on othe model bikes. One thing to also keep in mind, the XB front end is ment to break away in case of a hard enough wreck to keep from damaging the frame. I don't know if the Heli bars or the Vortex top triple will interfere with that. And after seeing all the damage my bike took after wrecking at 80, the fact the forks seperated from the bike may have cut my repair bill down alot. The forks are still straight, and there is no torquing or twisting in the headstock area like I have seen on other makes that have tumbled. Just some food for thought. Pics can be seen in the AZbuellers archive 03/29/05

Thanks for the input Wyckedflesh. I sat on my bike when I got home today and tried to imagine the different riding position and think I will be happier with the change. The break away bars make since and that explains what I've seed on the wrecked bikes. I'm going to go ahead and take my chances. I've always felt that if I wreck I'll just convert my bike to a custom frame. I also have the LSL Frame Sliders and wasn't sure if the Pucks would hold up in a wreck but after seeing your pics I have faith now. I called up American Sport Bike and ordered the handlebars and frame pucks.

Wycked -- First of all, sorry to hear about your accident. I hope that you're feeling better soon. How did your pipe come off of the header? Secondly, I think you may be slightly mistaken about the break-away headstock. According to the drawings filed at the USPTO, the area of the frame where the triple trees fasten (26) is actually supposed to fracture so that the fuel in the frame doesn't go flying all over the place in the event of a severe head on collision for example. After seeing your photos it appears that your frame is actually still intact.

Skeenix, when you take a look at the thickness and several pics of XB's that have tumbled through the air, you will see how the top triple and the steering stem break away. If I can I will snap pics of the stem and triples so you can see what I mean. It very much looks like it seperated right where it was ment to. Might be a seperate system for non-head on wrecks
