I've been laughing and shaking my head for the last few hours, and I had to share. On my way home from work, and, as usual, I take my 5 to 10 mile detour to get to my home, a mile away. So anyhow, I turn onto a nice road that heads out of town, and come up on a sporty, two up. The typical half brain buckets, jeans and flannel biker garb, accented with the typical screamin eagle LOUD pipes... he must of thought he had somethin' for me. We just get out of town, and I can hear the exhaust note on the 'ol sporty gain db's, so I figure this is his attempt at accelerating....SO, I twist the grip a little, and then back off so I don't run him down. I kept a reasonable distance, but paced the guy up to about 85 (45 mph zone ), then backed down. I don't think the poor ( slightly oversized )passenger knew what her gray knight was trying to do, and I did'nt want him to do anything even more stupid. So, I let him get ahead a bit, but I just could'nt help but gun it just once, reeling him in like a bug to the windshield. That was fun. We came to a 4 way, where I should have made a left, but somehow could'nt resist just tooling along a little further. He left the intersection, I waited. He got about an 8th mile out, then I launched... carried the front wheel through the intersection. I caught him before I even hit fourth. Once again I backed down, but had to laugh as I could hear him apply more fuel to the noise maker in an attempt to save face. I know it's below me to mess with a sportster, but he started it  I could here it gas away as I slowed and turned left for the twisty road home. I wonder if he felt victorious? | ||

My sportster isn't broken. It runs pretty good, and it's a '92. Totally custom, 1200...loud as $hit...always leaks oil. But there is no way is hell i would ever expect it to even come close to being able to keep up with my 9S. The bike shakes like a leaf at 90. I haven't had the balls to try and take it past 100. | ||

What is it that is said about an "assumption"?... Like assuming that a guy riding two-up on a Sportster "thought he had somethin' for me"? Maybe the guy simply liked to roll it on hard and hear it sing, just we you do on our Buells. Or maybe he was trying to be considerate and trying not to hinder the pace too much by getting out of the way the best he could. I wonder what he might be posting to his buddies about the crazy "squid" that was goofing around behind him when he and his girl were out for a ride on their Sportster. Anyone who looks for any kind of "victory" or competition on the street is a class A jackass in my book. Suggest anyone who has that mentality lose the tude real quick. The alternative is a long stay in the hospital at best. Sorry if the above is cutting and harsh. I've been there and learned the hard way. I was a competitive street riding jackass. Take it to the track where it is for real and not some imagined fantasy only existing in your mind. You'll learn humble real quick. | ||

We are buliding a 2005 1200C at work, its gonna have ET Stage3 Heads, Buell XB Pistons, SE cams (think they are the same as a buell grind....ill have to find out), D&D pipes, Ignition race tuner....I bet it will keep up with ur XB9, maybe even close to a 12? | ||

My previous bike was an '02 Sportster c/w most of the SE catalogue. Yup it was a great Sportster but a pile of antiquated sh*te compared to a modern bike. I just didn't get the 'Harley thang'. Now when I see a one, it's easy to imagine ME on that Harley and I know how the rider feels. So I overtake them at warp factor 10 in third and thank God I sold it :-) | ||

I had an 04' 1200R. Great bike, period. 10,000 miles in five months including an 875 mile day. The new rubbermounts are nice bikes. | ||

Amusing...I have a lil' 883 Sportster, good enough to get pulled over for doing 118 in a 55. (NO ticket, officer couldnt believe he was pulling over a HD in triple digits) Before I started racing I did some chuckle head moves on the street, my favorite was a trip to the Dairy in Danbury, passing two squids on R6's with my "stock" 883 and losing them in the turns. On arrival at the dairy I was questioned about the engine work, that it doesnt have. I am now a Stiffly Stiffersen on the street, the track has made me more aware of what a bike can do in the right environment, and I have lost the ambition to be a jacka$$ on the street. In a straight line my grandmother could do 140mph, enter the twists and thats when motorcycling begins. I would rather spend $200 on a track day or race school then $200 bucks for a go fast part. Oh ya I love my Sporty, But my XB9R is my dirty mistress..... | ||

I had a very similar run off at a traffic light with a younger hood on his way tricked-out Sportster with Screaming Eagle chrome stuff all over the place. I dropped him like the girls used to drop me in High School. THUD!!!!!!!!! | ||

Everyone talks about how fun the XB's are to ride, however, if you talk about having fun riding one everyone get's upset. That said, I am not talking about riding to the extreme on public roads, but if all I wanted to was the speed limit, I would have bought a Blast. | ||

It's more that people get a little beat up when they tell everyone how big their Ego is and how it fooled them into feeling that they were threatened by a sportster. It's pure Ego. Don't get me wrong... Sometimes I'm still a competitive street riding jackass. I don't generally drag anyone, but if I get passed on my favorite section of road I'll pick it up and keep up with them. People get pretty upset when they can't seem to outrun a Harley. I generally back WAY off the moment I detect that they are trying too hard. | ||

Have built and owned a few Evo Sportster "883s" that around town will suck the headlights out of XB9s, but I would never do it. Yeah....Right. I think we all have intermittant moments of stupidity. Sometimes it's tough to balance FUN vs STUPIDITY.  | ||

hello my name is taxman.. and i am a jackass. i can admit it. i do excelerate faster than i should. and i occasionally will find myself speeding. but 85 in a 45 isn't a jackass move, its stupid in anyones book. in my not so humble opinion that is just asking for trouble. same with wheelies through intersections. i'm not saying i haven't tried that. i'm just saying things like that need to be done in a more controlled environment. and the statement "if i wanted to go the speed limit, i would have bought a blast" i understand it a bit. i didn't buy the firebolt because its faster than the blast.. i bought it because of looks. bottom line. you can have fun and go the speed limit. but if you want to speed around thats fine. but dont brag to me about it. unless its on a track day. i like hearing stories about trackdays. | ||

Response 1: Once again I am amazed at how people can turn a harmless anecdotal story into a bashing of an irresponsible reckless m/cycle rider. Response 2: Gee whiz Blake I think you're a bit trigger-happy there. There was no competition, Deerhunter was just having a bit of fun. It was the other guy doing 85, Deerhunter was just hangin around. I don't think Deerhunter was pushing his limits or the limits of public safety during this time. I think he found the whole situation amusing and that's why he posted. And anyone with a 12 taking off from a standing start will know how difficult it can be to keep the front wheel down, and I'm pretty sure he would have checked for traffic before launching - doh! I think many here took that post and turned it into some sort of lets bash the idiot scenario. I owned a Sporty for 6 years, loved it, but the Buell is another thing altogether, a much better thing for me. I rode one of the rubber-mounts, they are heavier than preceeding Sporties and still feel slow even with the Buell heads and I suspect they have changed the front end geometry to steer slower and feel more like a "Harley". I wasn't impressed. The only thing I liked on it was the carby, you could chug along at 60 kmh very comfortably. | ||

I must admit I like blowing the doors off the soccer mom's mini van. Especially when they are trying to run me over. However I will slow and pace a hottie in a jeep with the top down any day. | ||

Four of us rode down to the Miami Motorcycle Show last Sunday, which was a $hitty show btw. We got passed by a f'n prius on the highway. Maybe he wanted to race, but we were too busy havin' a laugh. Personally, I was actually a little embarassed  . At least he was doing 80+ mph. I didn't even know those cars could go that fast | ||

wish my XB12 could keep up with my sportster.... but with a 52 inch wheelbase it just cant accelerate much faster. dont want to drag around wheelie bars, that would look real stupid. and a stretched swingarm would make it steer like a boat. so i just use the Buell for road trips, commuting,general polite riding and thrash the sportster when i need to make noise, pull 3rd gear wheelies, and scare myself silly. that is what it was built for. H-D sportster the original hooligan bike. | ||

WOW,did't mean to catch a trip wire. Just to put the reality into what was just a lite hearted story, I did not race the idiot. I was amused at his attempt to show me the "Extreme" performance of his ride. I let him take off. As it "Seemed" he was pulling off, I simply ( in 3rd gear )twisted the throttle and pulled right back to him ( about 20 yards )like I was on a bungee. NOW, he continued, when I shifted to 4th, I let off the throttle. I looked, it was upwards of 70mph. I looked BECAUSE I could not beleive this guy wanted to keep accelerating in a 45mph zone to those kinda speeds. Now, that said, this is a rural community. The 45 mph is because you come out of town, and into farm land, and thus there is the occasional farm equipment, and a house once in a while. The road is very wll paved, marked, and clean ( this time of year ). It has no turns, just some nice rolling hills. There are no trees on either side, in fact the right side is actually a golf course ( old farm, nothing special ) Visability is outstanding. The intersection is a cross road. A four way stop, again, visability is optimum. "Carrying" the front tire is NOT a Wheelie!! I "lifted" the front tire as I "Launched", yes launched. I did a jackass maneuver, I launched! Now with my extreme riders position of atleast 2 inches of air beneath my front wheel, My jackass instinc required me to continue this reckless haphazard attempt at road racing the next 1/8 mile or so, until I reached the un godly speed off 90MPH!!!!!! "Stop me before I Kill" I admit, I wanted to make this guy take the ol sporty to the triple digits, pull along side, smile, and waste him. What I did, was back off, toyed with him just enough to let him know, he could NOT get away from me, and I exited the next available road. Don't believe his partner ever knew I was there. I did not get on his •••, or push him. Oh, and the speed limit beyound the intersection is 55. It's wide open, rural countryside, some rolling hills and sweeping turns. That said, I appreciate and understand your comments, Blake, and beleive likewise. This is not indicative of my daily rides, but I do speed on this bike, sorry but it's true. Hell, I've gotten to the point where I don't shift into fifth until I hit 70. It just rides smoother that way. I don't do it to show off, or prove anything, it's just where this thing is comfortable. Oh, and one more thing, I have read in profiles, threads MANY speeds greater than I have ever traveled, and I don't beleive all where achieved on the track. ME. 115, tops. Once. 90, more often, hit it, and slow, I don't ride at those speeds. | ||

DeerHunter17, I`m with ya bud, You knowing the roads,etc.etc.etc., little bit of fun, No harm in that in my books , I`m heading now to the big 60 in years been doing that and more for the past 30 plus years and God Forbid , Hope to be playing for the next 15 years any more than that And I`m probaly pushing it :-),I mean these are Buells one of "Theee" Best controlable machines out there, Now the other guy packing double etc,thats another story!!! | ||
