I know i can use synthetic in the tranny but do i have to get primary fluid or just regular oil. I bought the h-d synthetic stuff and its says on the bottle it can be used in primaries and trannys. The dealer also told me i could put it in there. Any one else do this yet?? I know a lot of you guys run mobil one but i was at the dealer so i figured i would just run the harley stuff

Syn-3 will work just fine in the tranny. A big step up from Sport-Trans. Use it, ride, and have fun.

I recommend Mobil 1 75-90 in the trans. Mobil 1 15-50 or Red Line 20-50 in the engine.

Many on here prefer these lubes to the HD Syn.

Question--what are the API specs on the HD Syn?

Mobil-1 15-50 is not "quite" the right stuff...

It should be Mobil-1 20-50 V-Twin. The M1 75-90W gear oil is the right stuff for the trans IMO, but it STINKS!

H-D explicitly states that synthetic 20W-50 motor oil is suitable for engine, transmission, and primary case on all H-D and Buell models.

While we're on the subject, check out this link for a detailed analysis of the new Mobil-1 15W-50 formulation, Mobil-1 20W-50 V-twin MC oil, Harley Syn 3, and Mobil-1 10W-40 MC oil (from a thread further down the page):

I swear by the Syn3 oil in both components. H-D has formulated this lube with the right anti-wear components to effectively lubricate transmission gears, and allow great clutch protection to boot. They really put a lot of R&D into this. Also, if something grenades, the motor company will stand behind their lube as apposed to other companies that may not be as forthcoming. Hope this helps. Also, I put this stuff in my S3T and put 2600 miles on it. No carry-over, bike ran & shifted flawlessly.

"Also, if something grenades, the motor company will stand behind their lube"

I am still laughing at this statement. BTW_does the MOTOR COMPANY still NOT put an API rating on its SYN3 oil?
