Has anyone else had the rear wheel bearings detonate on their XB?? Had the sh** scared out of me on the 101 fwy near Rincon last week. The rear end started shimmying out of nowhere on smooth asphalt. Almost lost it but, was able to drop down to 50mph & limp it the last 2 mi home. Only have 5000 mi on it & I don't ride it especially hard. Being repaired under warranty as we speak. Any similar experiences out there??

Were the bearings the Black ones? I understand the Red ones are the upgraded version... My 03 has the Red ones already installed, but I'd like to know if they were Red... Then I'll start to worry!

I had a recall on my 03XB9S for wheel bearings, the replacements are red.

Facts:
  • There was never a recall on the rear wheel bearings - a check of the NHTSA website confirms.
  • The rear wheel bearings did not hold up as long in service as expected.
  • NOTE: some of you may recall the bronze bushings when HD reintroduced the "Springer".
  • There was a product upgrade.
  • There is no charge to the customer.
  • UPDATED wheel bearings are NOT OBSOLETE and are READILY AVAILABLE
  • They are orange (I'd buy that they may appear red as well.If you need to know if your motorcycle has had the update, ANY BUELL DEALER can look/check and confirm.

If you have questions and are not getting answer, drop me a note. Data is always better than rumor.

The difference between calling it an "product upgrade" or "recall" is a matter of semantics for BMC's lawyers.

I asked my dealer for the "product upgrade" on the sidestand and bearings, to which they replied with a hearty "What?" I said "recall" and they said "Oh, yeah."

There have been stories posted on this very website about wheel bearing failures on the 03 XB's. Typical failure was at 7500-8000 miles.

Ivanski,

Go to Knowledge Vault and do a keyword search for authors and search for "Sicemm ". You'll find a couple of threads from May '03 detailing my friend Ray's bearing problems coming back to Fl from Myrtle Beach on his XB9R. He got it fixed and immediately traded it in on a CVO ElectraGlide. His experience was not an enjoyable one both when the bearings went and then trying to get the bike repaired. He recently returned to the fold though by buying a nice black '04 XB12R.

Frank

Just an update: Was expecting to pick up my XB @ ventura harley yesterday. The dealership had to outsource my wheel to a machine shop in order to get the bearings out. When all was said & done, the damage to the wheel was so extensive, they had to order me a whole new wheel. The worst part is, the weather here in Santa Barbara has been beautiful, perfect riding weather after 5 months of record rainfall... & my bike won't be ready for another week.

PS: mello yello, I never looked @ the bearings before they blew, but I assume they were black (I think I would've noticed if they were anything else)
