Okay, I ve been ridin' my12r every chance I get over the past few cold weeks... Bike has run great! ..TODAY, I the temps were a sweltering 68 or so, and I went for a bit of a longer ride. I picked up my daughter and headed back. I got stuck in some stop and go stuff, and next thing I know, as I let out the clutch to get going,. ROCKER's PING and PANG. Sounded like a diesel!  . From that point on, I was gentle on the thing, and tried to keep it on the open roads and get some air. It just did'nt seem to have the same power after that. I noticed more engine noise,( probly just me getting nervous). Ofcourse when I got home, my wife wanted to go for a ride, so we took about a 40 mile trip. It did'nt knock, but seem to stumble once in a while. I also seem to miss a couple of shifts as it got warmer, twice hitting neutral while going from 1st to 2nd, and one time it seemed to get lost between gears. I have about 6500 miles on it now, and I noticed I need to adjust the clutch cable, too much slack, so that may be my shift prob. Unfortunately, there is major rain coming, and I won't be able to hop on for a solo run to compare for a day or so. Man, it was just running SO awesome till this...any ideas? for info, I have HD SYN3 oil, about 1450 miles i=on it, and the fan came on while sitting at the second or third light I was at, but after the knockin' started | ||

After sitting in heavy traffic virtually any bike will ping a little if you lug it some on take off. My Nissan pickup will knock/ping under similar condition. No worries. Absolutely no worries. Just ride it. Try to keep the revs up a bit more if you are averse to the diesel sound on take-off in hot conditions in traffic. Don't be a motorcycle hypchondriac.  | ||

I agree with you, but this was not heavy traffic, and was not hot. I rode all last summer, mostly two up, stop and go and the like, and never had this happen. I am going to try another brand of gasoline, change to mobil 1, and see how it goes. It was a bit of an imbarassment in this particular case, as I was riding with my brother who was on his v-rod. The smooth rumble of the revolution seem to enhance the sound of my valves! | ||

What octane level were you running? I would second your idea of switching gas brand, as well as move up an octane level if you aren't already. | ||

the oil companies change gasoline formulations seasonally. you may well be running the last of the winter fuel, which is necessarilly more volatile than your 68 degree ambient temps would require. the trans-seasonal fuel blends are quite often pretty crappy, as they switch over formulations, you could be getting any random blend of fuel components. once you heard the first pinging, and then missed a couple shifts, you listened to everything much closer. give all the fasteners a check, make sure clutch and primary are properly adjusted, and go ride, see if you can run 10 gallons through it this weekend that should sort ya. | ||

Hey Deerhunter, My 0412r is doing the exact same thing for the last 1500 miles or so...Same with the shifting, wierd and kind of annoying...I wonder if anyone else can hear the ping while i ride? I did notice different brand gas made a little improvement...Im in Nor California so im a little nervous about this summer...By the way I have about 5500 miles with race ecm, race pipe, and filter....It does go into dealer soon to have them look at that and a couple of other issues.... Did you notice a drop in fuel mileage as well? Chuck | ||

you sure its the rockers We had a bike in the dealership that had the rotor nut in the primary housing loose. The sound was travling and found out thats what is was. just putting my 2 cents in that was on a 04 xb12r | ||

Next service tell the dealer what's been happening and ask him to check the ignition timing, has been known to be out on a few new bikes. That just takes out one possibility. | ||

check the fasteners that hold the timing plate on under the ignition cover.mine got loose and let the plate move.instant loud spark knock. |
