I am now using a steel 20 tooth sprocket with a 6303 bearing. fits the stock tensioner arm and spacers just right. had some loosening of the chain tension on deceleration/downshifts, so have added a third tensioner arm mount, uses the same 9/16 wrench as the other two fasteners to adjust chain tension. seems ok at this point.

Interesting. So how is that working out for you? I've been thinking of converting to a chain system as well. Regardless, if I don't, I at least plan on upgrading to the 2004+ belt system.

no need to hide Loren, a perfectly reasonable question to ask. why would somone remove a smooth quiet zero maintenance drive system in favor of an oily, messy, grimy chain requiring frequent lubrication, and occasional adjustment?
I live in Alaska, travel far from home on roads which are often covered with sand, grit, and gravel. these elements very substantially limit the service life of a drive belt, and the associated pulleys. simple matter of durability combined with economics. my belt broke at 6700 miles, and the pulleys were very severely pitted and were in need of replacement at that time also. slapped a fresh belt on anyway, cause i needed to get home. in the next 3 weeks, the new belt was showing signs of extreme duress, so i embarked on the chain drive project. chain drive is good enough for my wifes ducati, my 1458cc sportster has been running chains since 1999, and the cbr1100xx, and hayabusa

are all succesfully running chain drive without problems.

Dean, I saw that you live in Alaska and figured your road conditions would be rather harsh, but PC's down here in the states, so I wondered what his motive would be to change to a chain.

Because there are areas down here where a chaindrive would have the same purpose as FP's. There are still areas that peagravel the roads on a regular basis.
