So, as many of you know, when I picked up my new XB9R, the fuel cap had been replaced by the dealer, and the new cap had a separate set of keys.

After a few calls to Buell Canada and also Buell Customer Service in the US (Rob was great to deal with), I was told that Buell could NOT supply me with a fuel cap keyed to my ignition key--logistically they are just not set up to do that. Nor could they tell me whether or not a local locksmith could help out.

So, I decided to find out for myself--I took the cap to a local locksmith. Dropped it off Tuesday afternoon, they called me Wednesday at lunchtime and said it was ready, and in fact they were going to be doing some work near me that afternoon. When I picked it up, the locksmith told me that it was actually quite a simple unit to work on; he charged me $15.00, and the cap works great with my ignition key.

So, FYI, it would seem that Buell locks are quite simple (from a locksmith's point of view) and if anyone else out there ever has to order a new fuel cap, just take it to a locksmith to get it re-keyed.

BTW, when I was talking to the service manager at the Buell dealer I had purchased from (I called to tell him I had managed to rekey the cap), I asked just what had happened to the original cap, that it had to be replaced? Seems someone in the service department had tried to use a screwdriver to open it, for whatever reason... They really expect me to take the bike back there for service?

Anyway, I'm still waiting on the weather here, and getting quite antsy to ride--in all truth, if the weather was nice and I could ride the damn thing, I'd probably quit obsessing over it so much!

Glad it all worked out.
A screwdriver?

I just picked up two Buells from another dealer and they evidently couldn't even figure out how the seats go on a R bike!
Neither one was installed right, the tab was on top of the frame lug it's supposed to slide in.
No surprise that "Buells just don't sell around here" (they actually told me this).
They are 45 miles from Appleton.

"Buells just don't sell around here"

Funny how often you hear that one...

That should be translated in to... "We are so used to just putting people on the waiting list, we forget how to actually SELL bikes!"

Hmmm...as a sportbike guy going into a H-D dealership for the first time specifically because of the Buells, there are a few things I noticed. And dealing with them...at least at my dealer, it really seemed that they were so used to simply supplying the necessities required for the Harley lifestyle to guys who were already sold on it by the media, that they didn't really have a clue about how to sell motorcycles. The only reason I bought one from them was that I was sold on the Buell before I even went in. I had done my shopping around, done some demo rides, and I wanted a Buell. The dealership didn't so much sell me one as supply me with one. Maybe that's why they had to wait a couple of years for me and Bake to walk through the doors to buy their two 03 XB9Rs (although the rapidly dropping MSRP might have had something to do with it too). The salesman doing my final check did talk to me about how he knew that shop was not the best place to sell Buells (as he put it, "Now you're gonna go over to the Yamaha place to buy your gear, right?"--and he was!).

The saleslady I purchased my bolt from actually warned me to be careful not to use the front brake too hard as it might cause a crash!Fortunately, after riding it, I would have bought it from a chimpanzee! And the only reason I have ever been back was to buy pin savers for my jacket!

Tell that salesman that if they had the stuff in stock you'd buy it from them Geoff...

Makes me wonder how easy it would be for them to rekey my ingition switch if I brought the original S swith to have the cylinder swapped for the one in the R switch on my bike right now...

Charlieboy, I've been quoted 6-week waiting times for some items--I'll deal with Daves by mail order, thanks.

And Wycked, go right ahead--but I'd advise you to get the barrels and take 'em to a locksmith.

Dave, my local dealer did the same thing with the seat on my R and I didn't realize it until it had smashed down the tab. Does HD pay their mechanics so little that they are hiring a bunch of young punks that can't get a job anywhere else?

Too busy worrying bout chrome and stroker kits......scary ain't it? All they have to do is maintain a "Buell" section, and it sells itself. I know every dealer that hangs a Buell sign outside, I try to stop and buy somethin, If they have the sign and no stuff I tell em to TAKE IT DOWN!!!
I'm waitin for the market to "flatten out" for
the yuppie bikers and then the "real" enthusiusts will suppport the $expensive$ t-shirt parlors. NOT! Then find real Buell dealer like the ones that support Badweb and racers.
