I have received allot of questions about the RAM mounts I used for mounting my Veypor unit and GPS unit to the bars of my Firebolt. Here are some of the details of the mounts. First off the mounts are built by RAM and I got them online from Cycle Gadgets.

For mounting on the clutch side I removed the plastic plug in the unused mirror hole and used RAM mount 11M, which has the mounting ball offset on a tab with an 11mm hole in it. For mounting on the throttle side I used RAM mount HB1, which mounts using the same bolts that the brake lever mounts to the handlebar with. You can get this one with one or two mounting balls.

For mounting the mirror tab I used a fine metric bolt M10x1.25 and a little thread locker.

For mounting the brake mount I thought I needed the SAE bolts when I ordered but the bolts that come with the HB1 mount fit perfect.

Once you get the mounting balls on the bike you can mount just about anything using the available brackets and cradles. The system is very flexible. I am using mine for a performance meter so I can measure gains and losses from my endless fiddling and a GPS/StreetMap, gotta know where those twisties are ya know.

The next thing I am after is a good way to get ignition switched power up by the instrument panel for the electronics and an outlet for some heated gloves. Anyone have any good ideas?

Jim,

Thanks for posting this - is this the mount(s) you used to setup the Veypor unit ???

Thanks, for the link and the pics. I've been looking for easy way to mount a Palm for on the go diagnostics and tuning.

You can actually see the Veypor in the first bike pic. The Veypor actually comes with a RAM mount consisting of a base plate mounted to the unit, an adjustable arm, and a handlebar base plate. If you are mounting on a Lightning I think you should be fine with what comes with the unit.

I think that RAM has Palm cradles. They have a whole bunch of different mounts.

Jim,

I used the same 11mm offset ball mount but attached it to the bolt holding the handle bar plug the comes with the Heli bar clamp. I have my Garmin IQue mounted to it on the right side. Next is mounting a radar detector. I think I will use the set up you used on the LH side

As for electric clothing I ran the Gerbing battery harness wiring under the seat and right up the middle in the front. I zip tied the plug in to my tank bag strap. it's out of the way in right where I need it to plug the Gerbing gear into at my waist. I clip the portable thermostat to the rear of the tank bag.

I have also been trying to figure out from wiring diagrams in the service manual where a good place to tie into key switched power.

For switched ignition power, if you don't need too much current, you could get it from the grey wire pin 1 on the black ecm connector, which is power switched through the ignition relay and ignition fuse. You could also get it from the flasher unit orange/white wire or the headlamp park light orange/white wire which are both powered through the accessory fuse. These would give you power with the ign switch in the on or park positions. I'm going from a Lightning 04 wiring diagram.
For heated clothing definitely power that from the battery with dedicated fuse, but Veypor units, GPS's whatever would be fine powered through the bike's original wiring.

Scitz, any details on what you're doing with the Palm?

CaptJim..
Couple of questions about that GPS unit. How do you power that via battery or are u tapped into the electrical source on the bike? If so where?
Also what information does the GPS give you? You have a web page for it?

Thanks

Question, that HB1 mount, does it come with everything you need to mount to the handle bars? I see in the picture that there's nothing to go onto the screws.

Both are on Ram Mounts

Riding position gives a clear view of instrument cluster.

The radar detector is also plugged into the block of LED's above the speedo via the ear phone jack on the detector. LED's are from MarcParnes.com

Here are some more detailed pictures of my Veypor mounting locations.

I used the RAM ball shown to mount the Veypor on the clutch side. The RAM stalk is what came with the unit.

I ran the wiring through some black convolute just to keep it extra protected. Travels along the inside of the frame underneath the airbox. The wiring junction box is wire tied under the seat to the Buell harness. The sensor wire runs along the rear brake line to the rear caliper.

The sensor is wire tied to the rear brake caliber mount on the swingarm. I used a good marine grade wire tie so it should last a while. The magnetic sensor sticks to the rear brake rotor. The magnet is pretty strong and will hold it fine while you get everything aligned up. Once in place I used some emery cloth to clean the rotor and magnet up and used the supplied super glue to mount the sensor in place. It has held together fine up to 120MPH so far.

I still don't have the unit running on switched power. I just plug/un-plug the connector on the unit. When I get a new GPS with street maps I will power everything up properly.

Have fun and enjoy your unit. If anyone has any questions send me a PM as this thread has already been eaten by the Archive.
