I am picking up my new XB9S tomorrow and I ask the dealership
me:"don't you need my weight to set up the suspension?"

dealership: "they will set it up like the book says"

me: Don't they need to know my weight to set up the suspension??

Any other advice for picking up this new (but 2003) bike??

Thanks my friends...I may sound pretty stupid on these things so I could use all the help

Yes

they will set it up like the book says

there is a weight chart in the book for suspension setup...

Hope you were talking to the salesperson and not a mechanic.

yes you'd think they would 'ball park it' to your weight and maybe ask about your riding style...as a customer service issue.
I think for 2003 there were 2 recalls , the side stand and wheel bearings. Make sure they have addressed those.

As Ted said, check the wheel bearings (should be red) and the sidestand (should have an "R" embossed in the foot). Welcome to the show.

Hey quick question guys. I have the black bearings in my 03, and i havent had any problems yet. But I dont have a warranty any longer. So should i change them or keep riding till they go bad?

Arv...My Sales guy was sneaky and set it up from my weight on my drivers license!! When he delivered the bike he told me. Good thing I don't lie about my weight!!

Don't EVER ride wheel bearings until they go bad...

EVER.

It's not a "warranty" issue. It's a recall.

Oh man! I've actually overheard service department people telling customers that they have to wait till a bearing fails before they are able to replace it. In this case it was a bearing inside the motor - but if a motor seizes, the collateral damage and possible wheel lock up could be a real problem.

What Don (M1combat) said....Ride them till they fail, and you've got a decent chance of being able to buy your new bearings already installed in a brand new wheel, as your old wheel could very easily be trashed.

Though technically, I don't think the orange seal bearing change out is a recall, I think it is a voluntary Performance Upgrade Program or some such thing. Could be wrong, though.

What is the possibility that his bearings go bad in a curve? I got lucky when mine went, I was pulling into Autozone and stop to talk with a friend. My left side bearing seal was gone and I only had three "ball bearings" left in the cavity. My point is- is itsafe for Lpd22 to keep on riding with the possibility of wrecking because of wheel lock-up? I would hate to hear him come back to the board and talk about a wreck because the bearings went bad in a sharp curve.
My dealer covered everything for me, even suggested that this would be the best time to do anything to the rims as Buell was paying for the labor and new bearings.

It doesn't matter if it's in a curve. In a straight line it could cause a tank slapper or a myriad of other issues.

Replace them ASAP.

thanks guys. once the weather changes im taking my bike right up to my dealer first thing. So is it a recall or do i have to fork out some money for the new bearings?

i haven't posted before but i thought i would share my experience with this. my bike fell in the timeframe and model year for the recall on the bearings. but when the dealer checked in there system it did not list my bike as one that needed it done. after showing them the information i had they did the bearing recall at the same time they did my race kit. if you need any info on this it is buell service bulletin # B-051 and it came out march 13, 2003.

it states: all 2003 xb9r and xb9s models produced before november 7th, 2002 (yes 2002, mine was march 2002 but is an '03 model year).

and the way to tell if your bike has had this done is to check the bearing seals orange=new black=replace.

if you guys would like i could scan the bulletin and send it to someone. i think this would be good info to have stashed somewhere, unless you already have a section for recalls

That's the key right there... If the seals are black they need to be replaced.

It's stamped on the bottom plate that meets the ground. On one of the corners.
