Hello to everyone still looking at BadWebB!

I already posted this on our french Buell forum, but, in case anybody encoutered the same problem, let's have a try here ; )

I already have some thoughts about what are the reasons, but none could be verified at this time as i had a tear in my calf last week. So my baby is in parts in my garage, waiting for me to try everything everyone told me to check

Here we go :

So, then, for posterity and the knowledge base, if I ever find the problem, I post here the problem encountered for two days as well as the different leads that I have been told

Small (big?) problem with my beauty after more than a year of calm driving 5 days out of 7 with: Loud metallic snap after ignition of the starter.

It's been a while since I found it slamming hard, but this bike is so noisy by default that I never know if it was out of the ordinary or not.

But tonight yes, it's about that out of the ordinary

All I had time to hear is that once the engine started it slams with each exhaust stroke (before? After? I don't know.

Didn't have time to test if with the clutch it disappears but I don't think so (I've already had the anti-dribble screws that had jumped, the sound is more diffuse and low in the engine).

There, the sound is heard, i think on the upper part so I'm afraid it's a story of valves. they've been checked 2 years ago at 40kkm.

she is about 50kkm old so I normally still had almost 10kkm of margin before the next check : (

If anyone has a lead and some time to help me out that would be great.

Thanks in advance !

And have a nice day ; )

At the moment, here are the tracks proposed and / or gleaned from the Web

Messed up valve clearance (Our mechanic Cedric): not checked
Timing chain tension (Our mechanic Cedric): not checked
Spark plug blown (Buell group 44-85): not verified
Dead rod bearing shell (Web): not verified
Exhaust leak (McGyver from our forum)
Seized up/dirty/dead injector(s) (colleague): not checked
Freewheel between starter and gear 53T(Sailor from our forum): not verified

I will not post the entire post in english, but for those who are interested, here's the link to our board where you will find (in french i'm afraid) the ins and outs.

Until i find THE thing that is trying to blow my engine, and then, if it hasn't been discussed here, i'll post it !

Feel free to offer me some leads, even if they may be eccentric (but still related : ))

Finally : Sorry for my english and my possibly bad translations. Google helped me sometimes, and sometimes not. Not yet fluent in english ; )

Have a good week Everybody !

If you keep driving it, you will trash the engine if you have not already. There is no free lunch. Remove the engine. Put in on a bench and take it apart. Then you will know.

Thanks for the advice Stevel ; )

Engine is already rotated and cam covers are removed for the firsts checks (valves I.e.)

I noticed while removing them that the spark plugs were really already loosen (could unscrew them by hand with zero effort)
Saw online that the sound heard could be done by this.
I keep looking at the rest of the given leads.

Also, all 8 valves lashes are out of spec, on the max spec size. So the "small" ticking noise heard regularly is now explained. But it cannot explain the big knocking or tapping or snapping sound heard on the video overnight...

I'll wait for our mechanic to come back from vacations to check the leads and tell me more.

It's hard to tell from the recorded sound but when I listened to the video, I immediately thought it sounded like an exhaust leak. How loose were the spark plugs? If they were not tight, you may be hearing combustion pressure escaping from the spark plug holes.

In any case, since you're so far into it, why not rule out mechanical interference. Can you turn the engine by hand through a couple revolutions and listen carefully? Do you hear anything amiss?

Long time have passed. Found the problem !

But at this time I'm not able to prove it was the only thing happening:

My timing on the rear cylinder was no good
Admission valves were hitting the piston 😬

Nothing broken, reworked the timing to test, two or three tooth made the deal, the engine turn round correctly by hand now

I'm waiting for the cam block tool to make a perfect timing and mount back everything.

Maybe this weekend I'll be able to say it's behind me...

Origin of the bad timing, supposition: a friend revved the engine (cold) the week before it happened,I shut down the engine immediately. I assume there was a failure in the hydraulic cam chain tensioner due to the cold oil and the need of oil change soon.

Well... we'll see soon if it was the only matter.

Oh... f#ck my English is really bad when I'm tired...

Sorry 😅

I'd say your assessment of the valves hitting the piston is very probable.
Never ever rev an engine when...
A.) Operating temperature hasn't been reached (doesn't mean as soon as T.C. reaches 172 degrees F)
B.) with no load.

She's up and running again !

Rear Cam chain had skipped 4 teeth !
Hydraulic cam chain tensioner was faulty because of old oil (1year and 2 months) and a cold revving by my friend.

It cost me nothing !
Just had to find the camshaft blocking tool from our french main dealer and redo the timings.

Took me 10 hours to mount back everything in place, now she's rocking back on the roads and I'm so happy of it 😍

Hope this thread will helps those who will have the same issues !

See you at the next issue 🤣

Wow, some ordeal.
Good that you found the problem.

NEVER...rev. a cold engine, above about 1500 rpm ! Give time for parts to warm a little, oil to warm and give ALL parts time to recoat all surfaces.

Ride careful.

Mike's advice is especially relevant in cold temperatures. It takes time to circulate oil in all engines and in cold temps, oil is more viscous.
