Yes, we are probably talking about something that doesn't make a difference either way. This bike is faster than my riding skills, so I probably won't be making any mods to the breather tube. But the breather tube does contaminate the intake charge and intake tract to a certain extent.

I don't mean to add fuel to any fire, but the sponge, in the end of the rectangular breather-hose, is dry. (I've double checked this, now) One side is a bit miss-colored, but it's dry. I'm pretty conscientious about not overfilling the engine with oil.
As I cleaned off the boots and airbox inside, my rag was discolored like K&N filter-oil.
I do not mean to imply this is the only reason for carbon build up, but maybe a mitigating factor.

What about leaky valve stem seals? That could be a source of the oil as well. I am no expert, just throwing it out there for discussion.

Also, I have been doing some research and it looks like when carbon is built up like that it has a tendency to come off in chunks. SO if you put some Seafoam (or Berryman's B12 which has the reputation as being the most aggressive fuel cleaner additive) you might run the risk of carbon chunks falling into the cylinder. I am not sure how much of a risk this is...again let's discuss.

What do you all think about an inline baffles catch can? Maybe this is a good compromise, although it would take a bit of ingenuity to find a good place to install it. I wonder how much vacuum it takes to pull the fumes thru the can? Check it out.

Thanks for that link, Harlan. I’m running my case vents to atmosphere, but I might try one of those.

IMHO, the most common causes of the buildup shown above are bad intake valve seals (Harley’s seals suck but they are short enough to fit where better seals won’t) worn piston rings and/or cylinder walls.

Oil can and does travel from one cylinder to the other during normal operation, so either one or both cylinders could be causing it.

If I repeated something said above, I apologize. I got tired of reading the thread.
