EDIT - For some reason, my browser auto-filled the subject and overrode what I had entered. The subject for this post was supposed to be "What vendor should I use to buy an 1125R belt?" Apparently I can only edit the post's body, but not title.

-----------------------

I figured I was going to change out my 1125R's belt proactively once it got to around 20K miles, and keep the old belt as a spare. Riding home tonight, I rolled to WOT in second gear after going through a tight S curve and.. the engine suddenly bounced off the rev limiter. Oh crap, I thought--it slipped out of gear, which means bent shift forks and/or rounded-off gear dogs.

So I shifted into third, and the engine zinged again. So I looked down and sure enough, the belt was missing. I got a ride home, then went back and picked up my bike with my trailer, only about a mile from home. The bike has 15,353 miles on it, which seems a bit premature, but then again, I am often liberal with the throttle.

Fortunately, I just got back from a trip to the Deals Gap area, during which I put about 400 miles on the bike, many of them at aggressive throttle openings. The 1125 has been ridden maybe 20 miles since getting back, so I'm REALLY thankful that it waited until I got home before failing. (I did trailer to the Gap so I wouldn't have been stranded--about 400 miles from home--but it still would have sucked to end the riding prematurely.)

So, is there any recommendation as to what vendor I should use for the purchase of a new belt? I figured I'd patronize a vendor that is respected in the Buell community before just price-shopping the part number.

They are the dealer which supplied American Sport Bike, Lance is great to deal with.

Plus one on Lance. I bought new belts for the R and the CR from him recently. Don't need them yet, but I'd much rather have them on hand when I do.

Actually, the CR will probably get the new belt when it goes back together...it's going to need it.

Surdyke HD had them a few months ago at a good price.

I'm pretty sure Lance sells parts @ 20% off of MSRP.
I don't know what Surdyke's price was..

Thanks, guys.

I was in the process of making the purchase from St. Paul HD via the website, until I got to shipping. $21 for crappy, unreliable USPS Priority Mail, and the cheapest FedEx/UPS option was $30! Switching from my home to my office didn't make it any cheaper, which it should have. I ship occasionally using a UPS account so I am familiar with the rates, and getting gouged on shipping kind of put me off, so I shopped around.

Newcastle HD had the belt for almost $30 cheaper ($147.78 instead of $175) and while shipping was also $21, it was at least UPS Ground, which I trust far more than USPS. https://shop.newcastlehd.com/part/g05001amg

It's hard to ignore a $35+ price difference (figuring apples to apples with shipping), so I bought from Newcastle.

Aaaannndd... Newcastle just emailed to notify me that it will take several days for them to get the belt in stock. I'm not in a huge hurry--I have three other bikes to ride--but time to give Lance a call and see if he's got it in stock and can do any better than what's on the St. Paul website.

My personal opinion on belt life is people with a smoother riding style get longer belt life. I consider my riding style relatively smooth and I have spent about 75,000 miles across 3 Buells and plenty of track days with zero belt failures and zero clutch issues. WHen

Treating your machine with respect and making measured control inputs is sound advice.

Belts are also sensitive to picking up rocks and debris, so gravel roads are ill-advised, as is taking all your beltguards off. I don't find the plastic covers on the 1125 particularly attractive, but they do a pretty good job of keeping your belt and sprockets in good shape. They don't weigh much either. There are of course lots of carbon fiber belt guards available for those with deep pockets.

I'm not a racer and really don't care that I might save a couple seconds by not using the clutch. Aggressive inputs in search of speed or thrills have a price, and I'd rather ride than wrench.

I'm happy to do the maintenance and modification needed to help an interesting machine perform at it's best. It's a partnership, and I like finding out what the machine needs and how it likes to be treated. The reward is a happy and highly skilled dance partner, with whom you can make magic.

The 1125 and it's progeny, the 1190, really reward "smooth".

I've never ridden an RX or SX, but my 1190RS rides like an XB9R with 160hp. almost 100hp+

I HAVE to do more than mile sprints, High Plains soon?

Got some stuff from the "liquidation".
2 2009 1125 crate motors and 2 sets of 1190 heads-one with valves and cams.

I want to blend a 160hp RS motor with a 160hp RX motor and make that a "sport-tour" with soft bags.

Lance called me back the following day. He didn't have any wiggle room on the $175 belt price but offered to ship for via FedEx for $20 instead of $30. I checked back in with Newcastle, and they told me that they expected to have the belt in stock to be able to ship on Friday. Since I'd already placed the order with them, I decided to leave it as-is.

My throttle inputs are generally really smooth, but I do enjoy the occasionally 1st gear or 2nd gear power wheelie, and that's undoubtedly a little harder on the belt. I also do run it up through the gears pretty frequently, which I am sure is more stressful than.. not doing so.

I'll just plan on belt replacement every 15K miles from here on out. Although it's taken me 8 years to cover 15K miles (I have three other bikes), so it'll probably be a while until I need another belt.

I am on my third belt, they seem to fail every 8K miles on the dot, literally within a few miles of 8K. Ride it hard but no deliberate wheelies, expecting another failure soon. I even replaced the rear pulley in case that was an issue. the belts being no longer available is my biggest fear for long term use of the bike.

Stimbrell, you may want to follow this advice from the other recent thread about belt wear.

Panshovevo said "Another thing you might want to try is something Jim Dugger suggested to me when I told him the belt was running off center and dragging on my R model after putting it down.

He suggested loosening the pinch bolts and axles, for the rear wheel, the swing arm, and the motor mounting bolts, and retorquing everything.

As soon as I loosened the pinch bolt and backed the axle off one turn, the dragging stopped. I'm not certain the belt is running perfectly centered yet, as I removed the tensioner to try to determine if the bracket is bent, but it's already way better than it was."

The new belt arrived today, but unfortunately, it's G0500.1AAH. I checked to make sure I didn't screw up and I definitely ordered G0500.1AMG. I've emailed Newcastle and am waiting to hear back.

On a related note, during the attempted installation process (before I realized that I had received the wrong belt), I accidentally dropped the tensioner on the concrete while removing it from my bike. I put several small-but-feelable-with-my-finger nicks in it. Should I plan on ordering a new tensioner too, or will my belt likely be unaffected?

File the high spots smooth with a fine tooth file, sand it if you feel the need.
Don't get carried away and create low spots, just remove any high ones..

Then treat it with some Alodine (or is it Alodyne?) or equivalent where the base metal is bare.

Then don't worry about it.

FWIW, i've bought a dozen or more purchases, sometimes multiple items per purchase, from 651Lance with never a problem... I might have paid a couple bucks more for shipping, but I keep an eye on such things, and don't feel like I've ever been screwed.

Newcastle sent me a label to send the wrong belt back, and ordered me another belt from Harley. That one, according to them because they checked before shipping it to me, also had the right label on the box but the wrong belt inside.

This may well be a result of there being a lack of stock of 1125R belts. If Newcastle doesn't have some helpful news from Harley tomorrow, I'm going to cancel the order and place it from St. Paul.

I had that happen years ago with a Blast belt, box was labeled right but had a Sportster belt inside, so this isn't something new for them.

Just a quick thought, would it be possible to fit a chain using the standard swing arm if a chain tensioner was fitted? I have seen after market tensioners on sale.

Stimbrell,
Speaking generically, I'd say there is a chance that you might be able to do it.

You would have to be prepared to use more than just a master link to get the chain length close enough for the tensioner to take over.

Those I have used needed modification to work properly to begin with, and then only worked properly through a very limited range by design.

They are intended to be used with a properly adjusted chain, not as a substitute for axle adjusters.

There may be others out there. Just telling my experience with what I've seen.

If you can put your tensioner in a vice where it will spin, you can take a 4" grinder with a fine sanding disc on it and if you hold it at the right angle it will spin the wheel while sanding it.This way it smoothes out without leaving a flat spot.I use this method to fix idler wheels on an end facing machine to fix flat spots.HTH

Well fiddlesticks. John at Newcastle says that the belts are backordered until approximately 09/04/17.

So I checked with St. Paul, and the belt is missing off of their website. I emailed, and sure enough, Lance says they are backordered until approximately 09/12/17. I bet some of you turkeys saw my thread and scooped up the remaining stock at St. Paul! LOL Well, my bad for dragging my feet on it.

I checked Ebay, and none are available there. Google didn't give me anything helpful.. well, TwinMotorcycles has them, but they're about 240 Euros, plus shipping, so a LOT more expensive than what the ones here usually cost. (Plus, wouldn't that be silly--ordering a part that was made in the US, then shipped overseas, then shipped back to the US.)

So, I guess I'm stuck waiting until September. Thank goodness for having multiple motorcycles!!

Should have it in a few days. Once I get it and confirm that it's the correct belt, I'll post up here.
