Hello, everyone. First of all thank you so much for alllllll of the incredible information you've all shared. I need some opinions on oil. I need an oil change and I'm not sure what oil and filter you guys use for both, performance and value. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

Here's my advice

Shell Rotella T6 - this is JASO-MA rated for bikes, has additives to help the metal that most oils don't have today, and is about $22 a gallon for full synthetic

And don't forget your crush washers, one AL and one CU. I replace both each oil change.

HD has them in stock. Your 1125 parts book calls them out. If you don't have a book, HD has them...for now. I'd get both the SM and the Parts book. If you can get your hands on the Electrical book, all the better.

Changing the crush washers and o-rings every oil change is very negligible. They can all be successfully used several times as long as you don't over-tighten them.

Do you know what kind of oil is in the bike now? You typically don't want to switch completely from a non to a full synthetic in one oil change. Some oils don't mix well.

The Rotella is a great oil...but it's "weight" is a little light(5-40w especially for me out here in the hot Southwest)...I switched over to Mercury's "QuickSilver" brand for motorcycles (V-Twin 20-50w)...WalMart carries it, at about the same price as Rotella
...Qucksilver/Mercury is sponsoring some riders in Racing (Moto America):

when the heat is on...it's nice to know I have at least 20wt in the sump.

Thanks a lot guys. I don't know what oil is in it now. I live in Pennsylvania, but its consistently around 90-95 during the summer riding season so maybe the quicksilver is my best bet. Ive heard a lot of good things about rotella too though. I'm not really sure which would be best for me.

LOL, everyone has a different opinion. I should probably keep mine to myself but.. I won't.

Several years ago, I recall reading that EBR recommended the AMSOIL Dominator racing oil. It's available in 15W50, which bridges the gap between 10W40 (which might be a little thin for hot summer use) and 20W50 (which might be a little thick for cold starts in the winter). It's not motorcycle specific, but I'm using it in my 1125R, my Speed Triple, and my Vmax with no clutch slip issues. http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/ra cing/dominator-15w-50-racing-oil/?code=RD50QT-EA

I may have replaced my crush washers once during the half-dozen or so oil changes my 1125 has gotten over its life. I've never had any leakage issues. Also, I've never pulled the filter screen. I should probably do that at some point.

I use HiFlo oil filters, which come with the rubber o-ring.

If Amsoil is out of the price range then just check out all their tests to see who is next in line in your price range. Mobil 1 20W-50 was pretty high up there but is $2 more a quart than QuickSilver..

I'm surprised that EBR would recommend Amsoil Dominator with a wet clutch. The specs say nothing about being formulated for motorcycles or wet clutches.

Must be something I don't see about it.

My owners manual to a 2008 1125r recommends screamin eagle as a priority then it has options if you can't get that, but I don't remember those.

Let's see.......wasn't Amsoil an EBR race team sponsor?

Yeah, can't imagine why that would be recommended.

See this thread in which Rodrob (who was campaigning an 1190RS) says that EBR told him that it recommended Amsoil Dominator 15W50. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/712777.html?1372249163

Perhaps this IS a reason to buy Amsoil as they were supporters of EBR.

How do you know your Rotella did fine? Engine didn't blow up?

I haven't sent in the Dominator 15W50 for oil analyses yet--I typically go ~2 years for the OCI because miles accumulated during one year are so low. (I have four bikes that share ~5000 miles a year.) That said, I'm confident that the analyses will come back good. Clutch slippage is not an issue on my 1125R, my 2nd gen Vmax (100+lb-ft of torque), or my Speed Triple.

Mortbike June 4, 2013
I spoke with a tech at Amsoil yesterday and he said the Dominator 15w-50 is not recommended for street only bikes especially due to the long term effect of the extra friction modifiers on the clutch and it is not rated for use with a clutch and is not a motorcycle specific oil for streetbikes. He also said the standard 20W50 Amsoil V Twin oil is bullet proof and more than meets the needs of the streetbike. I was interested in the Dominator race oil for my stock engine, street only, 1125CR as well as for my Harley XR1200. The XR1200 has a 1250 kit, cams, ported heads, stronger valve springs, etc, also only ridden on the street. He said I could put the Dominator race oil in the crankcase of the XR and the standard 20w 50 in the primary but it was not necessary so I am going to stay with regular amsoil or mobil 1 v twin 20w 50. Mort

What works best for a race bike isn't necessarily going to work on the street over the long term with normal street maintenance intervals.

Although the ad is packaged to indicate that, Eric does not mention Dominator, just Amsoil.

He also talks about "big long strokes" which (imho) sound more like he's talking about an XB motor, rather than an 1125 or 1190, both of which have much shorter strokes than the Harley built or based motors.

I wouldn't take anything in a generic endorsement such as this to mean anything specific without verifying it.

So Erik said "use Dominator" and an Amsoil tech said "use 20W50". Fair enough. Going with the oil that officially meets the required specification is certainly the safest route. I did notice smoother shifting with the Dominator 15W50, so to me it's worth the risk.

EBR said to use 20/50 for 1125 not to use Dominator. The 1190 use Dominator They use Amsoil at the factory in the new bikes.

I like the AMSOIL product because of its superb lubrication when really hot, but it is not available in Europe. So it's a crap shoot over here.

I find it strange that EBR would recommend different oil for the 1125 and the 1190. It is the same motor. Without knowing technically why, I would take that recommendation with a grain of salt.

OK, that's better.

I have about 38,000 miles between 2 Rs and have used Amsoil 20/50 exclusively. The motor itself has been about the ONLY rock solid part of both bikes. That's all the proof I need. The 1125 motor with race ECM is simply outstanding. Too bad the rest of the bike held it back.

Amsoil is a pain to get ahold of and I just dropped my last 3 quarts in over this past weekend. I'll get another case from someone. Any Amsoil dealers here? PM me a price on a case.

Stevel, all I've seen is one guy's word that Erik told him to use 15W-50 Dominator in his 1190RS. Not an RX, not an SX, not an 1125 of either version.

RS as in racing, where oil is typically drained after each race, and clutches have a short life span.

Anyone who wants to use it is free to. Let me know how it works out in the long run.

Edited to clarify I'm not questioning the use of Amsoil 20W-50 motorcycle oil. Just the use of Dominator 15W-50 on the street.

You know Fres, I have not been impressed with the race ECM. Bought it and used it on my 08, then on my 09

I got the one for the stock muffler and aftermarket airfilter, which is my current configuration

It helped, like the change to the engine braking, but I still have fueling surging at low speed, on/off throttle

Have a RT-3 and new ecm on order, hope its better

SprintST - Is the fuel surging a part of the idle air control or a lean condition?

I have had the EBR ecm for stock muffler and k&n air filter since 2010 in my CR 0 surging at idle in first gear and none at 5000 rpm steady highway speed 5th gear.
Have the EBR ecm in my 08 R with RT-3 the same
