Hey guys... Im looking at options for a cheap bike for commuting and owning 2 later model 1125's and having owned a 2008 a few years back I felt the 2008 was looser in the engine, meaning more noise etc, Im just wondering if anytone has high milage on an 08 model without any major engine work, Ive heard they can get the pitted engine cams etc, if it worth going for another 09/10 and fixing the electrical issues?

Cheers

A tech at our local Buell/HD dealer has an '08 1125R with 124,000 miles. Routine maintenance. No mods, stock rotor, VR and ecm, no rebuilds, no major issues.

Your assumption of poor reliability for the 1125 '08 model is just wrong. They are no better or worse than any other brand. Reliability is a product of good service and sensible usage. Consider that expected engine life of a race engine is 5,000 Km. Do you expect to see 100,000 miles out of a stock engine if driven to the red line in daily usage? I think not. Fast is never free.

Thanks guys, as Ive owned both the 09/10 model and the 08 i was just something I noticed between the bikes that the 08 was a bit clunkier, it could have also been the particular bike I picked up second hand had been ridden harder I guess.

Loretta, my 08, is a lot noisier than my 1190RS.
I think she has only 27 or 28k miles, once I got the Uly, Loretta sat a lot more.

2 trips her first year, one to south Texas and then Homecoming '08 with no issues.
Still solid and trustworthy.

Many little changes were made to the motor even in the middle of a year. My 2008 is a later 08, it sounds the same as my 2009 1125CR which was built only a few months later. A later motor is more likely to have revised bits like chain guides making it quieter overall.

I believe that the timing chain tensioner was updated in 2010. I swear I read that you can swap it in without too much extra effort during a valve check. I'm planning on doing this soon as I am due for another valve check so I guess I should start doing some research.

As far as reliability, I have almost 40k on my 09 without any motor issues. Stock stator and all.

Stock stator? Wow. Any idea why your stator hasn't suffered the same fate of so many others?

.. I think there was some theory that if you ride it really fast you won't burn the stator. Might burn your pockets with speeding tickets though

Not really sure. Maybe the type of commuting I do. Many 20 mile trips on my bike combined with 7 2000+ mile trips on it. I also ride alot of cold weather trips. I also run between 10 and 20 percent lucus synthetic oil stabilizer with Amsoil. The lucus quiets the timing chain noise but I can't help but wonder if it helps with cooling the stator.
