Guys, So Im doing some research on the Oil Jet rotor and saw a thread about an air cooled rotor, (Hildstrom), which makes a lot of sense. Has anyone tried this? Do you think the same concept would work if i did maybe 8 or 10 evenly drilled smaller holes in the same spot Hildstrom drilled his? Just trying to get some feedback.

Here's my page on it:
http://hildstrom.com/projects/buellstator/index.ht ml

From what I've heard, I believe Jsg4dfan and I are the only people who have done it. His setup mirrors mine. Mine is still working great and I believe his is too.

My 6 holes are 3/16". If you want more holes and smaller holes, a good starting point might be to make sure the total area >= mine. Using a multiple of 6 made it convenient for me to locate the holes based on the flange bolt pattern and the reluctor ring notches. If you use another number, you may end up needing to use a protractor or string and a tape measure to get accurate and even spacing.

Hey, So I did the mod you did and I feel its going to work great. I used a drill press with a laser to make it as perfect as I can. I really appreciate the webpage and the great instructions. You can add me to the list of this mod. It was extremely simple. Thanks for all the help Hildstrom.

No problem. I hope it works well for you. Do you have any photos of the finished product? How many and what size holes did you decide to use? What are you doing for the stator and regulator?

That's a pretty cool idea. Did you guys not feel the need to balance the rotor afterwards?

Even though the holes were small and fairly evenly spaced, the rotor still spins up to a pretty high RPM.

Hey I did take a few pictures. As for the stator and VR Im just going to see what happens. The stator actually looked amazing, a little oil burning but nothing crazy. And the multimeter readings were spot on. I did do the six holes the same as you. I used simple tools, level, protractor, ruler, eyeball, and a little common sense and it worked out great!

Puddlepirate: I didn't feel the need to rebalance the rotor.

Zew2888: I'm curious if the air-cooling rotor mod alone will be sufficient, so please share your experience after you put some miles on it.

It's been at least a couple of years since Hildstrom helped me rewind my stator and drill the rotor, and all is well. He knows his stuff. Well.

Well Just a quick update. Been 1000 Miiles and everything is great. I charge up to 14.5 when cool out in the mornings and in the afternoon in the Tucson climate I stay relatively low, around 12.1-12.4v but it does charge. I also keep my RPM's around 5k just for cooler oil. Runs great tho, awesome modification!

What do you guys think of the air cooled mod on a rotor with the EBR oil jet.
Saw someone mention that this configuration might improve oiling to the Sprague clutch
just curious if anyone thought this would be a desired setup

Jsg4dfan, thanks. I'm glad it's still working for you.

Zew2888, I saw my hot full-fan voltages increase a bit after putting my battery on a good maintainer/desulfator for a week or two. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200 326706_200326706

Bubba, the air-cooling mod holes draw air/oil/mist across the stator in a direction opposite to the oil-cooling mod jet, but I imagine it's still much better than stock. Neither mod will directly oil the sprague clutch. Are people seeing sprague clutch failures from improper oiling?

well.. i've read that some have believed this
- sprague failure d/t oiling or lack of lubrication from a design standpoint.

1 guy (cant recall who) actually said the rotor w/ the air cooled mod + EBR oil jet might be a workaround for sprague lubrication

SteveL is the only person I have seen proposing that there is a design flaw, or that there have been significant sprag failures. I have not read any other source, or sources, of numerous sprag failures. In the time I've been reading the various Buell boards, since ~2008, I have only seen two sprag failures. Of course there have been more than any one person would see reported, but I certainly don't think they are widespread.

I'm planning to perform the hilstrom rotor mod. It looks like using proper care and tools, the holes can be drilled with rotor on the bike. Is this crazy?

whoa...yes your method is crazy! -the rotor is an inside out type design...strong magnets in the inside of the rotor...you need to do some research on the process:
here's a couple of threads you may want to read through...read the complete threads to get an idea as to what you're about to try to accomplish:
Stator cover alignment pins....scroll down for some pix.
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/707303.html?1390686117

time bandit's description half way down describes some details on Loctite and torque required:
http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290431/ 665658.html

use the google search at the top of the page to look into more details...it works pretty good...

I'm sure some line mechanics at some of the dealers just used a big impact wrench and a deep socket (harbor freight sells them) with the correct loctite to R&R the rotor...you pays your money and take your chances....

Ok Nuts, it's been a few months since I read hildstroms report. I went through the links you provided. No doubt I had a brain fart of a idea. That said I'm going to investigate impulse wrenches. Still like hildstrom's fix. What happens to the mist of oil of the EBR fix? Doesn't the mist end up as rotten oil in the bottom of the cover? Still learning....love this board.

once you remove the rotor ...you should lay-out your holes so that they will be symmetric...the idea is NOT to affect the dynamic balance of the part...as you know it spins at pretty good RPM...pay particular attention to the thrust washer (on the balance gear) and the "timing" of the balance gear...these are areas often overlooked or missed upon reassembly...
as for the Rt 129...I road it awhile ago in the fall in the rain on a rented Goldwing, 2 up...you may also want to check out the Cherohala Skyway
...I found it to be much more fun.
For future planning purposes:

good luck

FYI - my setup is still going strong. Hildstrom drilled my rotor, walked me through rewiring my stator, and I also have a CE605 regulator (on the back of the license plate). Almost four years now.

Hey guys,

I have an opportunity to buy an 08 charging rotor to modify and have standing by. I had already bought a stator and v/r to fit my 09 CR. I was going to stay all 09 but, haven't been able to come by an 09 rotor as of yet.

I wanted to know from one of the resident 'pros' if the 08 rotor is physically compatible with the 09 stator? Would there be any hangups with design, width, depth diameter, etc?

I appreciate any info. on this.

Thanks, Tracy

What I can tell you is the 2008 rotor part number is Y0533.1AM and the 09-10 number is Y0533.2AM. I'm not sure what the physical difference is between them but the parts listed shows that they don't rev into each other.

The 08 is smaller in diameter. As well as the stator. That is why you can't swap them.

Thanks Lance and Shawn,

I figured something like that would happen. Sometimes I think if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have none at all. I was just about to drop dime on it too. Good thing I checked...

So, I guess the next question is for you, Lance. What'll it cost me to go through you to get an 09 rotor??? (assuming you can still get me one?) I didn't want to pull mine out to modify it until it's actually dead or dying.

Please go easy on me, I'm fragile. ; )

Thanks, Tracy

They are NOT cheap at all. I'm not at my desk right now so if I remember correctly.........You might want to sit down for this.......around $700-$800 depending on the year. I can look when I get home but it's around that range. Don't shot the messenger.

If you can get an 08 rotor and stator you can go that route. No charging issues there

Yeah Shawn, I thought about that route after you guys posted up. I've already purchased the gear to otherwise keep it entirely 09. I suppose I could put that all aside for a 'rainy day' and go all 08. Just kinda seems like a waste of the stuff on hand. It wasn't cheap either. (as you well know)

I'll wait to hear back from Lance first on a new unit's cost, and, will also consider pulling mine out (being off-season for me) and sending it out to Twins for modding.

Wish I didn't have to concern myself with either of the 'big two' (maybe three, with the low rpm fueling) weaknesses that these bikes seem to be victim to. I bought the Oberon clutch slave setup as well for that particular "rainy day". The previous owner stated that the clutch went dead on him one time before, within just a few months of being brand new, and that he had to completely re-service fluid through the system. It sure seems good for the moment, but, all bets are off on that too.

It doesn't really seem to be a question of IF it'll happen, rather, WHEN it will happen to both of these systems. I guess that's the cost of doing biz if we like these bikes. I do. That's why I came back to it again after owning a brand new 08 R back when it first came out. They're unique, quirky, and according to my wife, irresistable, just like me.

Probably too much information... ; )

Thanks, Tracy
