I changed my oil over from Amsoil 20w-50 over to the 10w-40 this weekend and I've got to say it does drive a tad better than the previous oil. That being said I was riding 2up in the city and I carried 1st gear up to about 5 rpm and I noticed a bit of grinding/shearing whatever it was the sound wasn't something I'm used to so I kicked it up into 2nd took it to 5 rpm, then 3rd and 4th and I don't notice it in any of those gears. Any ideas as to what it could be? The weather here is in the 90's so the bike was running hot.

on the 2008's we had wheel bearing issues...try and get your bike up on a stand and spin the wheels...the rear wheel usually goes first due to belt tension...if it is the bearings....use the google search at the top of the page to do a search on wheel bearings read about replacements...hope this helps

That might make sense because i did a bit of tank slapper doing about 90 on the highway, recovered thankfully. It sounded like it was coming from below the air box which is why i'm going to try and change the oil out.

Not sure how changing your oil is going to help your wheel bearings.......

It's not, it sounded like it was coming from below the airbox which is why I switched out the oil.

Update on the situation, I changed the oil out to Motul 10w-40 300V the sound has become slightly less noticeable but present. More like a swishing noise followed by a grinding noise, swish sound again, grind again. It only happens with a passenger on the back. Over the past couple of days I've really stress tested the bike and came up with nothing by myself. At this point I'm thinking its a faulty bearing somewhere inside the transmission as it only happens in the 1st and 2nd gears. 10.5K miles.

Rocket...have you seen evidence of metal when you changed oil???...look at the belt idler pulley...the added weight on back will cause the angle of the belt to change....another thing is the "belt guards"...the plastic pieces sometimes rub the belt....unless you see metal in the oil...I would look at the "drive train" external to the motor/trans...good luck
