I have a 2008 1125r and have several electrical issues. My fuel light comes on radomly even after I fill up (totally unreliable), engine light comes on randomly as well (most times unrelated to issues, just comes on then miles later goes away) I have had high beam issues of them not working but cannot find what's causing it and is inconsistant, I have to keep replacing relays (starter and ignition) as every month or less replacing them is only thing keeping my bike running, and worst of all the bikes instrument cluster will turn off and guages will die then bike cuts off and relays need to be replaced.
I have (after knowledgeable vehicle electrician's reccommendations) replaced the regulator\ rectifier to a researched "moffset" one. And still have all above issues.

To top it off I have taken the bike to harley 3 times now for this issue, (they have checked everything they know) and have swapped the battery out 3 times and are now telling me I need the EBR ecm, as mine is the overall issue.
Problem is EBR is now out of business....again.

My bike is almost so unreliable that I cannot ride it for even short trips and I may have to just let it go. I'm trying to avoid this without continuing to just throw money at the problem.

If you can flash the ecm, great! But I am using a stock GSXR exhaust now as all other pipes I've tried are way too loud, ie: barkers, Dean adams, hmf, and another chinese manufacturer. (Stock exhaust is too quiet and, let's face it, the thing is very ugly.
I understand if the tune won't be perfect but if the bike was reliable, I'd be happy.

Please please please help!

Hi, hope you don't mind me asking, but did the dealer do a diagnostic of the instrument cluster? Just curious

The random cut out is likely the wires to the ignition and the fuel and engine light will be the low fuel sensor, if you search this site you will find all the information you need to fix your bike, neither are major problems. Good luck.

I'm a newb to Buells, but one of the basics in electrical troubleshooting that remains constant regardless of vehicle, is verifying the integrity of all grounds in the system.

Veteran1125cr - top of mind, 2008's have 3 issues. instrument cluster parasitic drain:replace, ignition switch wires chafing, clutch slave leaking. all of the previous posts are good as well.

each one can easily be resolved.
i know how hard it is when the good weather arrives and 'issues'!

Veteran - as mentioned the Low Fuel light and the Engine light are most likely related and a due to an older firmware code in the cluster. I had mine replaced under warranty (when I still had it). Well documented here but beware you will find info for two different failure modes.

As for headlights, do you have low beams? Are you blowing the headlight/start relay fuse at all? High and Low are grounded from the same source so if they are both out then suspect the ground, fuse, or start relay. If it's just high beams then try using the flash to pass button to see if Highs come on. If the do then your problem lies in the high/low beam switch. Let me know how that test works out and we can go from there. Will look at the electrical manual for your other symptoms when I get a chance.

Interesting thread. I was about to post a similar thread. On my new to me 08, I've noticed fuel light issues. The other day it came on, I went to fill'er up and was only able to put in a gallon. Light went back off, so I figured maybe there's some issue with the fuel level sensor. Is there any way to validate the firmware you have in the cluster?

On the XBs if the high beam is stuck on, it is an issue with the ground under the flyscreen, I haven't seen the same happen on a CR but I could see it being possible

Cmgaviao, if you put your cluster in diagnostic mode (hold MODE and TOGGLE while turning key to ON), then tab through all the screens one of them has the firmware version of the cluster.

The low fuel light is either bad cluster firmware, or the sensor on the fuel pump itself.

Electrical manual is confusing and I may have given you bad advice (I hate doing that) on the headlights. Need some more time to study it but give the test I mentioned above a try. The lows are definitely powered through the start relay and both high and low are grounded at the same point on the chassis. There looks to be a white power lead that either comes from or goes to the cluster for high beams which might be just to power the indicator light.

cmgaviao - on the back of the cluster is a sticker with the firmware. 5.1.1 and 6.0 I think were the bad firmware versions.

If the LFL and CEL are on at start-up and go out once warmed up then it's the cluster calibration (can't be updated).

If the LFL and CEL come intermittently after warmup then it's the sensor in the pump drifting out of calibration. The pump is an entire assembly but if your handy you should be able to replace the thermistor or recalibrate it by adding a trimpot.

This - more weirdness on this bike is related to loose grounds than any other single issue. Check neck and engine grounds first.

The headlights use the starter relay. It has contact between the 2 terminals 87a and 30 during run, It opens and throws power to the starter solenoid during crank by opening the contact and making a connection between 30 and 87 . This is why the headlight s go out during crank. Replace the starter relay and you should be ok. I just had to replace mine. If you are grounding out the relays at any point you will cook them and they will need to be replaced. Make sure you are using the correct amperage relays. The starter/ignition relay is 35 amps

Had ALL of the above problems as well. Replaced the gas pump. Replaced the voltage regulator. Replaced stator and rotor with twin mc version. All problems gone. The defect regulator was toasting the battery and burning out the headlight bulbs.
