Few years ago I replaced my rings and valve seal.. Cause my compression test was off about 67psi between cylinders.. Bike only had 7k mils and burning oil. I did not hone out cylinder for a unknown reason I have always have hone cylinder when replacing rings. Bike has no issues compression is about 12psi difference and runs strong. I've put about 9k mils on it so far. I have no idea way I made this choice. But I'm sure there was a good reason for not to hone but far as I remember the grooves felt pretty good inside cylinder. This was a poor choice on my part but would like to get your opinion on this. This is a very inbaressing topic to mention. It was a bad time for me and my head was not on straight a lot of family trouble distracted my judgment on this. But I'm thinking about redoing it this winter. If I do should I replace rings again and hone or wait and keep an eye on compression test... Thanks

If these are coated cylinders like Nicasil your hone would not touch them, need a diamond one to do em.

Only 12 psi difference and 9k miles? If oil consumption is OK, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

If it ain't broke... don't fix it...

Enjoy your bike. If you do have to tear back in, all you really "wasted" was a few hours and a gasket kit. Nothing to loose sleep over.

And given how it's running, you didn't waste anything. If it needed honing it wouldn't have good compression.

I redid my XB12X with 30k miles on it (valve seals and head job) and I didn't even replace the rings (much less hone the cylinders). They were fine.

Nicasil is staggeringly good stuff...

Too many unasked questions. Was there bore damage? Were the bores round?. If the answers are no and yes, changing the rings alone would probably be fine. On the other hand if there was damage, buy new cylinders, you need very special equipment to resurface Nicosil. Lastly, there are no oversize pistons, rings or bearing shells for this motor.

I don't think I really needed to change rings valve seals would have been fine cylinder was in spec and walls really looked like it had just been hone.... Like I said head wasn't on right at the time... Should have waited for better time to work on bike.. She was layed down and started to burn after that... Compression had a 67psi difference between front and rear.... Problem fix now and she runs like a women in heat....lol.. But that was a few years ago. Not sure why in worried about it now....just something I'm thinking out loud and thought I'd share. Thanks guys for the replies
