Looking to get a Gopro for the R.

How and where do y'all mount it? Just wondering what mounts I should get with it.
Thanks.

I really like my Contour, helmet mounted.

I prefer the form factor, and the simple slide on, slide off feature.

I like that it points where I'm looking, not where the bike is pointed. Fixed position mounts can miss stuff

I have the suction cup and I use it 99% of the time. Mostly on the airbox cover, some times on the scoop. I'm not sure with my new cover but we'll see. I love it. Which one you getting?

Chris.

I have two mounting spots on my R
- near the throttle side mirror
- at the front of the nose where the windshield starts

I use the sticker mounts and they've held up really well, though I always secure it with a bit of a tether, just in the event it comes unglued at 100+mph

I'm looking at the hero 4 black. Seems to be the best they offer at the moment

That is my concern, I don't want to spend that much $$ to have it blow off at speeds.

The Silver is the best for your everyday user. The integrated touchscreen and live view are features that you want.

I have a couple that i use, and have multiple mounting points. Have always used the sticky mounts and have never had an issue.

Rule of anything that you are attaching to the bike: tether. I put a length of safety wire to some hard mounting point as a secondary tether to ensure I won't lose the camera if the mount would decide to let go.

I have one on the front just under the windscreen, one on the tail, one on the passenger peg bracket mount that is under the tail, one near the right hand mirror facing my throttle hand, one on the bracket right behind the dash to point back at me....and that might be it at the moment.

I'm due for upgrading mine, I have the 1st gen HD Hero's now. The quality has increased a bunch with the newer ones.

Having the screen of the 4 Silver, I would have got my throttle cam aimed better in this one.

Installed correctly, the GoPro mounts (both sticky tape and suction cup) are not coming off. There are people that attach them to airplanes, race cars, rally cars, virtually everything you can think of. You are more likely to snap the arm of the mount off before it detaches itself.

I personally run suction cup mounts, they stick great even on curved surfaces like our airboxes and pods. That said, I do recommend using fishing line or something to tether it to the bike, that way if you didn't get a good grip with the mount you won't be out a $400 camera.

Also I recommend putting a small note with your contact information in the case with the camera. It improves your odds of getting the camera back in the event you do lose it.

drm1125 - i use a short piece of gutted 550 cord to tether it.
Even at 140mph I've not had an issue (using during drag racing) for a few years with the same mounts.
But again, that 25c piece of cord that I use for a tether is worth it to me

I have jumped out of planes with the sticky gopro mounts, no problems. However...

Best setup for a bike I've found is using the modified purchase case, directly to the chin bar. It sees what you see, and unclips when done. I would place a sticky mount there, but the curve is too great and has air vents also.

I used the adhesive-backed mount and installed my Contour on the bottom center of the fairing, below the headlights. Also tethered with 550. Worked great.
Ive also strapped it to the passenger peg, so the relative lean angle of the bike is visible.

Do be cheap or not to be cheap?

I really want a hero 4, however a coworker of mine has an original Hero HD with all the kit that he will sell me for $80.
Love that it is cheap.
Hate it does not have bluetooth link and video quality is not as good.

Be cheap or go new?

Nothing wrong with getting started with the cheap one. Then, when you do get a better one (maybe a good deal on the Hero3) you can use the old one as a second view.

For the first one go cheap, see how you use it, maybe wait for the Hero 5 before upgrading.

Yea the newer ones are better, but it is not like the old ones are bad.

Is it 720 HD, or 1080 HD? That would be the deal breaker for me.

Know that they are insanely wide angle with no zoom. So they work great for point of view, and are great when you need something durable. But as a video camera, they suck for many other things.

They do 1080, but you will want to run it at 720 to get the higher frame rate to limit the jello effect.

Its a 1080 and I talked him down another $5. lol

Not bad IMO, a nearly new Hero HD with a bunch of kit for $75.
So now I can do some vids for the ADK Ride!
