Ya, the torque is cool and so is the sound. But being unique has cost thousands. I'm done with this lump. A local wants to trade me for his fizzer and $500.
I heard the pop again last week. So I took the rear tire off and behold, another bearing fell out and the hub is worn out. Pissed. A new three bearing setup is gonna cost a ton of money and it's black.

I feel like the bearing failures are potentially due to the axle being overtorqued. I think it's really easy to get too aggressive on the torque. Instead, I make the axle snug and rely on the pinch bolt to keep the axle from loosening. My bearings are in good shape, front and rear, with about 13K miles on the bike.

Chris - sorry to hear your frustrations.

Sounds like you need a new rim OR a new 3 bearing setup.

When did you last swap bearings? How many miles and how long ago? Replace the spacer at same time?

Knock on wood i've not had an issue, but did get the black seal bearings i think from the start. Wonder if the original failure wore out the bearing seat and then nothing is going to work well there. Or if the shop did it and over torqued them?

Super lame man. I know it doesn't help a ton, but a used rim is not that $, and getting them powdercoated or painted isn't a bunch of $ either. Just takes time and find a good shop to do it. Replace your spacer w/ new if it's not to specs.

Sucks to lose an amazing bike for things that might be avoided w/ some increased PM/maintenance. BUT like all vehicles - maintenance costs go up over time and at some point you need to do it yourself (save $), or cut it loose if too expensive to maintain...

Best of luck whatever you decide to do!!

I torque my wheel at 50% of what the service manual calls for. Pinch bolt factory speck after several tires bearings still like new.

3k on the bearings and spacer. I do all my own work. I dont heavily torque either due to pinch bolt being there. It happened after 26000 on first wheel. I bought this wheel off ebay that had bearings n it. they were in there fine and tight. I replaced with these new bearings. This is the second time this has happened to me. i didnt press fit the new ones. I used thermal methods. Maybe the spacer wasn't tight. but i still dont see how that would cause the bearing to slip around and wear out the rim.

Why? it only calls for something like 40ish ft/lbs of torque, which is minimal compared to other makes of bikes. Where possible I torque everything to high number of the specification, especially on the critical fasteners on the wheels, brakes etc. That being said you should be ok with the pinch bolts torqued down tightly, as you indicated. I think we have all tried to loosen the axle before loosing the pinch bolt. Good luck with that.

I see many posts regarding wheel bearings. I'm at 41,000 on mine, original set. No problems. Other results?

I love my 1125r, but seriously, the things been a real POS. I simply cannot in good conscious recommend to anyone that asks getting one of these things. I continue to ride it when it works, and fix it when it doesn't, and I do regular maintenance and take pretty good care of it.
And do enjoy the heck out of it when I do ride her.

Character, soul, power, handling, she's got it all, but boy howdy, it seems to come at a price.

However...

YMMV.

I also think that the manuals torque procedure is there for a reason. I hand torqued and that may not have been enough pressure on the bearing.

I have about 35,000 on two sets of bearings with a number of track hours on both bikes, no issues whatsover.

However, I don't ride in any adverse weather unless I get caught out in it by accident.

I have put 75,000 miles on Buells since 2008 40,000 on a uly and 35,000 on 1125R with stock torque about every 2 tires new bearings. 50% torque 4 tires still like new if you install the bearings a little on the tight side you can feel a roughness in the new bearings with the spacer in there. Loosing the bearing a little nice an smooth then 1/2 torque on the wheel. The wheel can not go anywhere. I played with a lot of bearings with my 08 Uly til I came up with the 50% the Uly is worse than the 1125 on bearings.

Also other bikes have rear wheels that can move back and forth the Buells can not.

So how do any of these comments help resolve my problem. My axle is true. I rolled it on my granite counters. The bearings didnt fail. I popped them open and they look fine. I just don't get it.

Maybe the thermal method of installing the bearings had unanticipated consequences?

Could the bearings be a hair to small or went in at an angle? If its not to bad Loctite has a bearing retaining compound #35 Max Streneth

So wait...just to clarify...you bought a USED rim.

Pulled out bearings that "felt fine" and replaced them.

How many sets have been in that wheel?

How were all of them installed?

You don't know...but you're blaming it on the bike.

HTFU. Buy a new rim from American Sport Bike, have Al install the bearings for you, follow the manual for axle installation...and report back.

Im with Ratbuell…. who knows what happened to the wheel you bought off ebay. Luck of the draw…. if you are buying used I would try to stick with bad web. way safer gambling here.

I just bought an '08 1125R after wrecking a well sorted '09 1125R… After a few weeks of shopping for a replacement and looking at all options I am convinced you can not buy more bike for less money in the 4-5000$ price range.

Maybe you just need to drink more Buellaide… I sure as sh!t did

Did you replace the bearing spacer? They have a tendency to deform. If one or both ends of the spacer aren't true, early bearing failure becomes pretty certain.

Seems you have solved your problem - trading it on another bike plus cash.

Chris,
Some where in the myriad of posts in the 1125 section I ran across some one who had purchased "All Balls" parts they failed shortly after installation he opened the bearings and found that there was no grease in them, All Balls is a distributor for various bearing related items,

Ball bearings USUALLY have the basic number on one or the other races I suspect that
in expensive bearings are poorly made and have low quality grease in them (if any at all )

if the hub and spacers are not destroyed, better bearings may solve the problem

A guy said he wants too. I didnt' say I wanted too. But that is an option. I love my bike and was just pissed at the time. I will do whatever it takes to keep my scooter. I purchased a pair of cr rims this morning. He threw in new oem bearings so I can have them installed. Currently the rims have factory bearing in them with 13k miles on em. I think I will have them installed by the local race shop on his machine. I used thermal methods last time. I'm just trying to eliminate this from happening again.

have you considered just using the bearings that come with the rims? Save the new bearings for down the road, if necessary?

What process is being used to install the bearings?

Improper installation could cause the bearings to fail quickly. I saw mention of heat being used but no mention of the type of tooling was used to press the bearings into place. Proper press tools with spacer alignment support is essential to assure the bearings are pressed square with the spacer. The tooling must also assure that the inner and outer races are loaded concurrently to assure that they remain in the same plane once the inner race contacts the spacer. This will assure that there is negligible side load on the inner race.

Thermal methods i.e. heat hub and freeze bearing. They just drop in.
Ya I think I'll get a couple opinions as if I should replace the bearings in the new/ used wheels or ride on em. What is the recommened service interval for them? My manual is on the other computer that is down at the moment.
I talked with an old harley guy/ marine aviation mechanic and he just couldnt believe that there is no adjustment on the belt.
