I was setting up for a tight right turn. I kicked down a gear without the clutch. This usually gives a short bark from the rear wheel but it's typically no big deal. This time the shift lever kicked back against my foot several times and the rear wheel locked. I grabbed the clutch and stomped again. No change in outcome. The bike is totaled. I'm a fair mess but no internal bleeding or broken bones. Just a lot if soft tissue damage. Armored leather for the win. I've had a few false neutrals but never anything like this. I know there was a recall on early 08 transmissions but that fault was related to fifth gear. My problem happened between 2nd and 1st. Any ideas about what failed? | ||

Any ideas about what failed? I am pretty sure it was the nut that connected the handle bars to the seat that failed in this situation... | ||

Sounds like a bad crash..... Glad you are okay. Is the engine/transmission still locked up? No Neutral? Im not sure if I recall a previous transmission locking up. A few rear brakes have locked up though. Check the oil for debris, disassembling is the only way to know for sure. | ||

Sorry to hear about the crash and bike damage. Obviously, a clutchless shift that causes the rear wheel to instantly and momentarily freeze is putting a hell of a lot of energy into some itty bitty transmission parts. | ||

Sorry to hear...glad you are ok. Depending on how you ride and how often you shifted without a clutch, could be any number of things. I don't want to be "that guy" but the bike is fitted with a clutch for a reason. By changing down without the clutch and possibly not being "synced" or rev matched, it shouldn't have gone in gear. Then you said you pulled in the clutch and "stomped" it. Excessive force could have broken or cracked the dog, a gear, a collar, etc. Any of that could have caused your misfortune. | ||

Trying to slam it into 1st from second without the clutch could cause a sorts of issues in the transmission. I hate to hear of your crash and I am glad that you are OK but the transmission is not designed for that. Clutch-less up shifts if done correctly, but not down. | ||

I'll concur that clutchless upshifts are generally okay; downshifts, not so much. Surely "howworkclutch" must be a name-rape--too much irony exists for that to be a self-chosen name. | ||

People have been giving me grief about my transmission abuses for years. The name has always been accurate. On the plus side of all this: I just got a yam fz07. Great little bike. The clutch works real nice  |
