Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone else has discovered this. I had to remove my stock exhaust to put new header seals in the pipes where they go in the muffler. When I loosened the left front mounting bolt that holds the muffler/oil cooler to the crankcase mount the cast mount fell out as it has broken away from the crank case.
I have since remounted the muffler with only one bolt holding the muffler at the front now. I feel this is strong enough along with the pipe clamps and the rear mount bolts. I would like to know if this is a common problem and if it can be reattached someway with some special welding techniques.

Cheers from Australia
Tim

3 OPTIONS
1. ride it as is
2. weld the bracket back to the case engine assembled then ride it.
3. replace the case.

opt 2 may result in need for extensive repair,
you might be able to e-bay an engine for the case and spares.

hate to see this good luck.

here in the states casting often get overstressed or worse sometimes too long a bolt may get installed into a "blind hole" in an engine block in the wrong location and crack the casting(and ruin the engine block) ...some smart guys in Texas came up with an epoxy like substance that when mixed together becomes very strong and works well with all types of castings....JB weld ( see link below)

http://www.jbweld.com/

JB weld is usually available at better Auto supply stores (don't know if you have NAPA down under)

another brand of "metal epoxy" is Devcon which I believe is now owned by the ITW company (Illinois Tool Works) they also own Permatex a company that makes gasket sealers for engine assembly.

http://www.devcon.com/

if you can't find these products at a local auto parts shop...
you could order them from McMaster-Carr, a hi end "hardware store" ...McMaster-Carr may have a warehouse in your country...

http://www.mcmaster.com/#

I have used JB weld on my frame to "weld" the bosses that the rear sub frame bolts to....as my 1125r is a rescue bike from a salvage yard...that was back in 2009...still holding strong.
Hope this helps mate!

Thanks for the info on the epoxys...I know of Devcon as I have seen people use it here before and will get that if I cant find any JB weld.

Devcon is the industrial version here in the states. JBWeld is more of a consumer product available at every auto and hardware store. A good etching cleaner will help the bond and is often sold where you find Devcon epoxies in the states.

Holy shitballs I have managed to get some JB Weld here in OZ.....

I did a product comparison between devcon and JB weld with the stat sheets off their websites and JB weld comes up as a stronger product...If I am looking at the wrong product let me know as I really want to get the best, that's why I researched the brands before I committed to purchasing...

Would like to put my Barkers back on again but have to get an EBR ECM as it throws a check engine code after a while as I am only running a stock ECM. And the Barkers doesn't utilise the broken mount that I am repairing.....But I find its just a tad too loud...must be getting old!!!

cheers from OZ

Barkers has silencer inserts, they help.
Ear plugs help too!

there is only "one" JB weld ....comes in two tubes....the product is white and black, same consistency as toothpaste...mix 50/50 or 1:1...end product is grey....do your best to "clamp" the broken piece to the case...safety wire/ty wraps/duct tape ...something to eliminate air pockets in your repair.

if it's cold outside (I believe your going into fall down under) - the heat from a light bulb may help in curing...don't over heat...give it a good 24 hours to cure...

my mates and I use these earplugs, they work best for me....

Flents Quiet Time nrr33 (purple in color)

http://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Time-Comfort-Pl ugs/dp/B001F5VDVE

they're also available at Wal-Mart

... and if it get's too hot down there....remember to stay in the shade of the coolibah tree and have a waltz with Matilda for me!

JB Weld also makes a "steel putty" that I have had pretty good luck with in the past. I don't believe it is rated to be as strong, but it can be a lot easier to work with. It comes as a two part putty (sold as one stick; one part of the putty is basically the "core" of the stick, the other part is the outer part of the stick, pinch off what you need and knead them together). The nice part about this is that you can prepare the product, put it into place, secure the broken piece, and once it dries you can file it, cut it, or paint it.

Best of luck.

Well I put the JB Weld on ( Part"A" & Part "B" tube version) and left it over night with the head of a 10lb sledge hammer resting against it to hold it in place and the mount is solid like a rock. However I wont budge it or bolt anything to it for 48 hours just to be on the safe side.

Decided to go back to the Barkers exhaust. As far as the loud sound goes I was probably thinking more of other people rather than myself. But if it gets annoying I have access to about a dozen different types of earplugs where I work or I can use my silicon moulded plugs I use for Clay Target shooting.

Now time to crack a cold one ( have a beer) under that coolabah tree and whistle Waltzing Matilda. ( Should be our national anthem not the crap we have now)

I would like to thank everyone with their advice and suggestions on this forum ...much appreciated

Cheers from Oz ( Australia not the Dorothy and Toto one)
