Changed my oil. Oil plug had a small pinhole size particle on it. Few more in the oil and filter. Pulled the screen and I counted 4 more and 1 in the tube. Took a picture of it but it is too large to post. Would like to know if I should be worried. Can email it to anyone who would like to see.

Its metal. Around 5 flakes a little bigger than a pinhole. Very thin pieces. Easy to roll the flakes up.

If anyone wants pic PM me your email address.

Okay I checked out the pics, how many miles on the the bike more then likely that is the first time the oil screen has been cleaned I have seen worse.I can't advise you what to do but if it was my bike I would ride it hard for 500 miles and check the oil plug again.

13.5 k miles on bike. Just bought it last week, so no idea what PO's habits were. He was in the military and young, so (not to be condescending) I'm sure you can guess how he rode. Bike runs fine, not making any sounds out of the ordinary. I've built some Harleys that have made worse sounds and run just as well.

I'm wondering if that is normal wear though...has anyone seen anything similar? And what could be wearing like that? Thin flakes...Almost like something is just barely rubbing. I can't think of anything internal that could wear like that.

If it isn't making any loud noises and is running good ride the thing and keep it over 5000 rpm don't lug it

What could lugging it do? Traffic is a thing where I live.

Pinhole size? So THAT small?

Agree with MPhalin. Clean the screen and the drain bolt, reinstall with OEM oil filter, use new rubber O-ring on the filter cover and new sealing washers for both drain bolt. Fill with good oil, preferably synthetic, and it should be fine. Bike takes 2.7 quarts of oil.

Since you suspect the PO's maintenance habit, you may as well change the engine coolant. I'm sure the PO hadn't touched that. How are the brake/clutch fluids? Has the major service ever been done? It's due for a valve inspection at 12,500 miles.

Brake/clutch fluids look fine. Not due for a coolant flush per manual yet. Just slightly overdue for the valve service if it wasn't done. Planning on taking a weekend to do it once I get it running again (electrical issues/hopefully just dead battery).

Plan for now I guess it to refill oil, change battery, ride hard.

Bump. Still curious why the bike should be kept over 5k rpm.

While it doesn't need to be kept over 5k, (I almost never hit that), the bike is happier at the higher half of the rev range. The charging system works better at higher RPMs, the fueling on the stock map is better at higher RPMs, no solenoid activation if still stock, more responsive throttle, etc. The bike simply loves it when you really use it, and will happily reward you when you do.

Only downside to the higher RPM is lower fuel economy and more tire wear, so I personally just keep it in 6th and cruise as much as possible and enjoy what I can without risking my license. I am not afraid to drop down a few gears and wring it out or keep it in the upper half for the times I want to have a bit more fun : )
