well I can't seem to get the search function to cooperate... I just bought another cr couple weeks ago & was told the clutch leak and water pump leaks were both fixed by the dealer. so the first day I get her home the clutch fluid was squirting out of the cup. not a huge deal, was planning on the ebr upgrade anyhoo. ordered & replaced the slave cyl, life is good! then on my road test coolant is leaking from the weep hole!! now I'm not happy.. I suppose like some dealers, it might have been hacked on. and judging by the missing nut on the shaft behind the slave cyl I'm sure it was hacked on a bit! so rant over so what makes this little hole leak? is it something behind the little water pump cover that can be replaced or does the engine really need rotated down & the larger cover removed? any tricks?? | ||

My bike has 12,500 miles on it and I rotated the engine for a valve adjustment. I also removed the water pump and right engine cover for inspection. My question is should I replace the water pump seal even though it wasn't leaking? On average how many miles before the water pump seal leaks? | ||

Out of 6 these bikes I've owned, only the one I bought as new old stock (0 miles, 2009, purchased in 2013) ever had the problem, and it had it around 1200 miles. The rest of these bikes had more than 10k on them, and two of them had 40k plus on them. Basically, ride the shit out of them and there's fewer problems. | ||

so is it open it up & change a seal? or replace all the pump stuff? and dennis I told you to buy a cr not the slower r & you didn't listen either  | ||

"Basically, ride the shit out of them and there's fewer problems." Agreed,.......a bike that is not ridden much will eventually develop problems that need to be sorted out verses one that's regularly ridden. Since it ain't broke I won't try to fix it. | ||

I noticed some dried spatter beneath the weep hole while gassing up on my second to last ride last season. Oddly enough, it didn't do it again between that fill up and parking about an hour later. I intended to do the 2010 upgrade all winter and just didn't get to it. Decided to risk it and go for a ride this spring (to warm up the oil before draining it), and I can't find evidence of a problem now. Now I'm about 200 miles into the season and haven't spotted a drop. Am I crazy, or is it possible that I only had a few drops from a piece of crud working its way out of the seal or something like that? | ||

Jim, Can either of you confirm if the updated oil and rotary seals would fit in the '09 cover and housing, and work with the '09 shaft part number, or does the pressurized oil seal require the entire set? The reason I ask is that it looks like the job would be much easier if all you had to do was remove the pump housing and replace the oil and water seals. Was a press or the special installer tools required for the oil and water seals as depicted in the service manual? I'm in (maybe) the same boat. I've noticed some black bits and pieces downhill from the weep hole, but no obvious water coming out. First race weekend at the end of the month.... we'll see how it goes. Hopefully they are just crap that got flung up there from the tires and track surface. I just finished fixing a jumped time issue (cam gear slipped about 20 degrees somehow and caused intake valves to slap piston, breaking cam followers), and wasn't in the mood to dig in right now, so hopefully I'm just paranoid....   | ||

The 2010 cover is an upgrade, not the manual recommended service procedure. Chances are pretty good that the cover is original, and it just has new guts in it. Especially if the dealer did it, they like to go by the books. | ||

I asked EBR what I needed to upgrade to the oil cooled water pump seals. That was my 'very good source'. They told me I needed the 2010 clutch cover. Funny name for that cover, because I think of the cover that houses the slave cylinder as the clutch cover. This clutch cover does cover the clutch and the rest of the right side of the engine, including the water pump. I cannot confirm if the 2010 parts will fit a 2009 cover or not. I just did what EBR suggested. Jim was able to get an entire assembly. On his, we just swapped out the new cover, pump already assembled in it. I do not have the connections he has. I had to get mine from the local Harley dealer and put it together myself. I did not need any special tools, but I am sort of a MacGyver type that can make anything work with tools and materials on hand. I pressed one of the seals in with a 3/4 PVC water pipe coupling and a bench vise. Haha. |
