As I understand it, I can fit a 2 bearing rear wheel onto a 3 bearing axle, correct ?

And I assume that I will also need to use the 2 bearing spacer, and not the 3 bearing one ?

2010 CR - stuck at work due to a puncture - and the tyre (tire) is trashed. Got a spare 2 bearing wheel so intend to get new rubber fitted and swap it over.

Yes, the new axle will be fine for an old wheel.
H-D doesn't carry the old axle as it's been "superseded".

I'm sure the spacer will have to be changed as well; the 3 bearing spacer will have to be shorter than the 2 bearing version. Think about it- the outside width of the wheels is the same, and you're adding an additional bearing inside the wheel, so there's less space between the inside shoulders of the bearings and the spacer has to be shorter.

You mean the spacer between the bearings in the wheel? no way to do that.
The new axle will ride just fine on the 2 bearings it just has an extra bearing surface for the 3rd bearing.

Just pull the wheel that's flat and stick the old wheel in and go.

To be clear here, the newer 3 bearing axle does work with the 2 bearing wheel. I have this set up in my 1125R. The bearing spacer is different. I think what Zack was saying is that the spacer is installed inside the wheel hub between the bearings. Unless you are swapping out bearings, the spacer is already in there. You can use either wheel interchangeably. The only time you have to worry about the spacer is when you change the bearings.

Some of the confusion here is that the 2010 wheel uses a different spacer setup than the previous wheel design. The old wheel had only one spacer, which is in between the two bearing races, while the 2010 wheel has two spacers. First spacer is in between the races like the older wheel, then there is another spacer that sits on the end of the wheel on the brake rotor side. That second spacer is super thin, and it is easy to lose it when doing a tire change. That second spacer will not fit on the old design wheel.

For reference, here is a picture of the spacer inside the wheel between the races



Top one is the older spacer, the bottom is the 2010.
