Video of problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwYEK4OLL5s

I'm having an intermittent starting problem for a while now and don't really know what to look for or replace first. The solenoid clicks on and off repeatedly and quickly while the starter turns the motor over but not enough to start.

Things I've checked:
- Battery is fully charged
- Starter wire tightened
- Solenoid wires tightened
- Fuses checked
- Battery terminals tightened
- Starter switch wires checked

thanks for the help everyone.

Check the wires at the back of the ignition switch. These are known to break. with the ignition on you can jump the terminals of the solenoid with a screw driver to rule out a bad solenoid. Since i see all your lights coming on, I would start with the solenoid first.

How old is the battery?

Another thing...maybe try taking the HID light of the loop to rule it's draw out as an issue.

chk the ground connection under the seat/tailsection - near the swingarm pivot...
I added an extra ground on mine ( it get's hot out here...more heat = more resistance) see here /scroll down for P/Ns & pix:

there is also a relay that controls alot of initial activity ( lights/fuel pump/ecm/starter) ...in a plastic case near the battery...it's the only black one in the case...it's similar to a head light relay found in autos ( you can try and find a substitute at the auto parts store)....HD V-Rods use the same relay and some have trouble starting because of it....hope this helps

I checked the ignition switch wiring: one wire's soldered on and the other has a ring terminal with a screw (I cleaned the connection and tightened the screw).

The battery is still the original from 2008/9 and was my initial component of concern, but it load tested perfectly fine. It was fully charged when trying to start, too.

I'll have to check that ground, nuts: didn't know it was there but could be a part of it. Thanks for the info.

I ordered a used starter solenoid from eBay for $14, so I hope that it takes care of it. If not, no big loss there, but I'll feel better having actually eliminated a component from my troubleshooting tree.

I'd say it's time for a replacement for the battery, but that's just something I've carried over from the mid-80s Honda V4s- IATB (its ALWAYS the battery.) Make sure the relay that nuts4mc mentioned is good, too. I've seen a V-Rod do the same flicker thing, but it would eventually start if you dicked with it long enough.

Jeep... have to agree with Wymaen...after 4 years I look to replace my battery(even if it bench tests good)...think about the lead time on the battery in your bike ...it's an '09, but the battery was most likely juiced up in '08...it's 2013 = 5 years old...the starter and ecm/coils like a good strong 12volts....might be the fastest fix that works with minimal effort.

I'm guessing you don't hear your fuel pump kick on either and only the starter solenoid clicks and starter spins. I had the same issue and traced it down to the socket where the fuel pump connects to the main harness. The 4-pin socket used by Buell (I blame Harley) at that place is GARBAGE!

After swearing and yelling one day when I was stuck on the side of a road, I popped off the seat, checked fuses/relays (obviously nothing), then shook around some of the wiring and as soon as I wiggled the flat 4-pin connector for the fuel pump I heard it go off. I opened it up and bent the pins a bit, plugged back in and good to go...for a while.

Later I have replaced it with a 'Deutsch DT 4 Pin Connector Kit' and solved this issue once and for all. And cost only $10.

This solution has solved my hot start / no start / embarrassing stalling at red lights / headache issue altogether, and finally I feel some love for my 1125R : )
