My three friends and I are embarking on a trip to tail of dragon on 9-27, leaving in the evening from Columbus Ohio. We will return Monday afternoon. All sport bikes going so far. We camp out every night, sometimes split a room one night.

If interested let me know.

Do they still allow the big rigs on the tail of the dragon?

Semi's are banned from the NC side but not the TN side. The amount of rigs rolling through has decreased dramatically.

So be careful when riding south, but be damned careful when riding north!

This is why I like the track.

For the record...the truck was coming up from the NC side. While hanging out at the store...trying to find a clean pair of boxers...a 53' tractor trailer made its way down from the TN side.

One day I'll post the video to youtube.

This will be our third consecutive year going down, but first time going in September. We went in April the first time and rode that mother fudger in the pouring rain! Last year it was in July so it was nice and toasty hot, but regardless of the month it seems to have cops on it all the time. We don't just go for the tail, there are tons of other roads in that area to hot that are less patrolled.

Georgehitch17, glad to have you along next year maybe. There is 5 of us now with a potential 6th.

The Cherohola Skyway is a much better ride. Just watch for a diminishing radius turn at either end. The dragon is fun to bike and people watch.

It's tempting to outride sight lines. And it works, all the way until it doesn't, and you come around a corner to see Ricky Racer having run wide and in the middle of your lane. : (

The Cherohola has far more turns that you can see all the way through...

I heartily agree lol, everything the tail of the dragon comes up in coversation I always tell people that the Cherohola is better.

I will say one of the most fun rides I have had in my life was on the Dragon on a *very* ratted out KLR-250 with dual sport tires.

Set the speedo at 40 mph (35 mph speed limit there) and bomb the whole run at exactly that speed without slowing for any corners.

When I started, there was a big group of sport bikes behind me. They would reel me in on the straight, then fall behind on the corner. When they started getting clearly frustrated, I let them by. Remember, I was already going 5 over the speed limit and holding it there even through the turns.

Three minutes later, I go by the Parsons Branch pull off to see them all pulled over and talking to a couple of clearly cranky local police officers. I maintained my 40mph and waved.

(Karma got me back for feeling smug though, I blew that KLR up later in the day holding the throttle pinned to maintain 70 MPH on the Cherohola for almost an hour trying (and failing) to outrun a bad storm. Turns out the little KLR burned oil FAST under those conditions, which wasn't a big deal, until all the oil was gone.

ow

Great memories!

That's cool! That picture was from that day, and you can see where the speedo needle is pointing. Google up a KLR-250/600 speedo picture? 40 MPH on the nose. : )
