I posted this in an old thread in the archive, but I guess they don't get bumped back to this list. Anyway, I have an 08 1125R. I bought a
used 2009 cluster for it. After installing it, and turning the key, I
don't get the count down and I get 3km on the ODO. Is there a
different sync procedure when putting a used cluster in? Does the key
need to be on the whole time for the 30:00 minute countdown to work?

Like I mentioned in the old thread, because the cluster is used, it is synced with someone else's bike. You only get the countdown and correct mileage with a brand new cluster.

Yep. I didn't see your reply in the other before posting here. And that sucks that the cluster has to be brand new. I don't think I read that anywhere in researching this.

Please to explain in more detail...what's this 30 minute countdown?

Are you saying the odometer doesn't work (just reads 4km?) I thought from other threads you could just swap them out at will, and it was a popular mod to get the gear indicator on the 08's.

On a new cluster, it gives a 30 minute countdown after installation, after it reaches zero the cluster downloads your mileage and VIN from the ECM.

He bought the cluster used, so it has the mileage of the bike it was taken from.

Our instrument clusters are only able to learn one ecm. So only one vin, etc. Once married, after 30 minutes, it remains faithful.

It means a used cluster won't have all the functions of a new one.

New ones are quite expensive at $280 from Harley.

What do you mean it wont have all the functions of a new one? Do you mean it just won't copy the mileage?

New or used, the clusters work the same on any vehicle. The only issue that comes up is when you put a used cluster on a different vehicle. For legal reasons you have to have at least one component on your vehicle that stores and can't be altered the mileage of a vehicle. Otherwise someone could constantly burrow a cluster from someone else and lower their mileage and then put their old cluster back on.

Like I said though, functionally the clusters work the same on any vehicle no matter its used state.
