This is like, the 4th thread about it...check out the EBR and redundant EBR/Buell news pages.

I do wonder where this 400hp number is coming from?

From the patent document . . .

quote:

[0011] In some embodiments, the ridden vehicle may have an electric motor producing in excess of 200 horsepower, or 400 horsepower. In other embodiments the electric motor may produce in excess of 150 horsepower. In further embodiments the electric motor powered by both the internal combustion engine and generator, and the rechargeable battery may produce in excess of 200 horsepower.

quote:

[0041] The presently disclosed ridden vehicle in form of a motorcycle may be capable of having electric motors 41 producing in excess of 200 horsepower while having improved fuel efficiency due to the internal combustion engine 42 optimized to drive a generator 43 to generate electricity to charge the rechargeable battery 44. In some embodiments, the internal combustion engine may be configured to operate at a desired single speed, or a desired set of speeds, for maximum efficiency. In other embodiments, the electric motor assembly 41 may be configured to produce in excess of 400 horse power.

Imagine the possibilities! Right now, I would look hard at a Zero, but I can't quite bite. It costs $12k, and if I need to go more than 100 miles... I... just cant. Period.

I don't actually need to do that often, but sometimes I will, so that would make the zero a niche vehicle for me. A second bike.

Same with the power, the zero is effectively a KLR-250 powerwise. Most people would mock that, not me, a KLR-250 is perfectly adequete for 80% of what I want to do on a motorcycle. But not for 20%, so again the Zero would be the "second bike".

Nothing wrong with that, but $12k for a "second bike"? That's not where I am in my life... I'm not even sure I can swing $12k for a first bike unless its an offer I can't refuse. The "second bike" club should be $5k new and $2k used.

But what if a single bike was a plug in hybrid that would do 50 miles off the charger driven like a KLR-250, then just switch to gas when it's out of electron holes? Hmmm. A 100% bike. And when I wanted to load it with crap, put a second person on it, and try and keep up with somebody like Jim Bantz, Alex Prior or Ferris though some NC hills? That ain't happening without at least 100 HP, I need some power to compensate for my relative lack of skill. : )

So there it is. One bike gets me the insanely cheap commuting fuel costs, could carry a ton of luggage, but does everything else I want.

Then I'm thinking $12k is a steal for the "first bike" that is a great naked standard or adventure tourer with a 200HP motor just by itself. And the fact that it is a plug in hybrid to commute makes it the second bike for me as well, so there's another $5k of value to me. And more space in the garage for the third bike ; ) (the pure dirt bike).

So all of a sudden, somebody (me) who would think a $17k bike is absolute insanity... is suddenly in conversations with finance folks and wiggling budgets around.

It could be a pretty compelling package... a 200 horsepower adventure bike that gets 100+ MPG for commuting. Holy crap!

I hope somebody builds it before I'm too old to be able to use it. You have 20 years or so... get to work!

I watched the fim super e bikes race at indy they look like they pick up speed much faster then the gp bikes. They top out at 160 mph.

Reep, Mission motorcycles has stated that within 4 years they will make available a bike more capable than the Mission R for $14k. Now that is a bike I would seriously consider.

While I understand the challenges electric bike makers are facing, I'm to the point where I don't even believe what they say about bikes they have already released... much less what they claim they will be making and what they claim it will cost.

Even by the very stretched "measured at the brochure" precedent for motorcycle specs, the EBike maker claims have been pure and simple fantasy.

I wish them all the best though...

I love the smell of race gas, but I think the Ebike will be a larger market than, say, the 1190 market is. Some of the motors in these things (Ebikes) make big torque, so yeah, I can see higher acceleration rates. Weight will be an issue, especially if a IC motor/generator unit is part of the package. But then again, there are lots of 800+ lb. bikes sold every year. Could be interesting.

400 hp?? doubtful - but it's just a patent app., not the final production vehicle. Probably no more than 150 to help keep riders from splattering themselves.

Sci-Fi ramblings:
Wouldn't it be awesome if they could radiate mega-rf power from a tower to the race e-bikes in a process that could convert that energy to charge/maintain a race bike's batteries to last for a complete event? I'm sure that the technology is already here (radiated energy was mentioned in Riders Digest), it just has to be developed for that purpose.

Yeah that Rideapart thing on the electric bike is hilarious....and as far as an electric bike going a full event, I believe Motoczyse (the only other US sportbike maker with a US engine) has run their "Digitaldrive" electric bike in a GP race during testing, and I think is kicking arse in GTXGP & Isle of Man races.

So yes, they can do a whole sprint race on electric without Tesla coils. Although that would be cool. (Twisted Metal 3, anyone?)

You gotta know this thing is coming... the question is whether it's a "10 year plan" kind of bike or if they're gonna throw buku resources at this to bring it out ahead of the rest of the world. Would love to see the collective big 4 faces if/when this thing hit's the floor.

I think a bike like this would bring awareness & media attention to the rest of the brand and create the halo effect that auto manufactures are always seeking. Sort of a "yeh we do gas bikes but we were looking for a bigger and better challenge." Gotta be a home run though...

Reep- great post. That is precisely my dream bike. I commute 5-10 miles one way each day. Throw in getting groceries, trip to the post office etc, I'm under 50 a day almost every day. I cannot justify driving my truck for those errands, just too much gas.

Now, plug in for the round-town stuff and have the HP for the mountains- I'm in!
