Are their any special tools required for getting the valve shims in and out? Thinking about digging into mine tomorrow morning. I've been really busy the last year and my valve check keeps getting pushed off. Coming up on 25k and I'm leaving on a pretty high mileage bike trip in 8 days. I know, nothing like waiting till the last minute. I am an ASE certified master technician and know my way around cars very well. I don't know a ton about bikes but I think I should be able to wrap my head around it. Any tips/do's and don'ts are appreciated. | ||

Use a stick magnet to get them out. I reinstalled them with my fingers, being very careful. Might be hard if you have fat fingers though. Also be careful when reinstalling the fiber spaces between the cam followers. I broke the corners on two when doing mine. Last make sure your rear valve cover gasket is seated well, its easy to mess that up and have a big leak. Other then that it isn't bad. | ||

use lots of rages to fill up holes where shims can fall don't ask me how I know. Pull the motor it makes it a lot easer | ||

I'm almost together now. I have an EBR ecm, can I leave the giant solenoid on the throttle off or will it flag a code? | ||

On a side note, all of my valves were on the loose side of spec. WEIRD  | ||

The EBR ECM does not even look for the solenoid, it will not trigger any codes regardless if it is hooked up or not. | ||

You should be in good shape for a while. Mine went tight from 1st to 2nd valve check. Had to replace 6 shims. I dropped a shim, took 3 days to find it. with arthroscopic surgical tools...   Z | ||

the little plastic clips between the finger follower are pretty easy to break... be gentle. but if you break one no biggie. they are cheap you'll just have to wait for hardly to special order one |
