Hi guys, was out for a nice 400 mile weekend ride when I noticed both the check engine and battery lights had turned on. A couple of quick button pushes over to the voltage meter and sure enough it was showing 11.7 and then 11.6 and so on. Pulled over and that was that for the ride.

As I've never had the dreaded stator failure, I'm wondering if the sequence of events includes the check engine light coming on or if this could be something else?

Oh and by the way, the free 60 mile road side assistance towing and accommodations included in the Harley extended warranty is a joke. You pay for everything up front and then, if it's determined to be a warranty issue, they will reimburse you up to the maximum limit(s), which in general are too low by today's standards anyway.

Sounds like it. Heard some dealers will work with you on installing the EBR rotor.

Does anyone understand the process to purchase the EBR stator? The website talks about sending the current stator in for "evaluation", a $250 deposit, etc. Do I have to send the current stator in to them before they send me the replacement stator? Or do they send me a new stator,charge me and extra $250 and then I have to ship my old one to them and after the evaluate it, they may credit me back $250? That would make an upfront cost of $675?

I wasn't aware that EBR even delt in stators. They have the rotor modification/exchange program. Which is the $450 then you get part of that back.

I'm all confused I guess. I need to read up on what is the rotor and what is the stator. I thought EBR had a fix for the stator issue and that was the rotor thingy. Maybe there's more to it...

Joe the Rotor is the external cup with magnets
it is modified to cool the Stator, the wound part

We presume that testing was done and that the stator was found bad. rather than the VR or a wiring problem...

Most of us do our own work

Thanks Jim, I think I got it now. Luckily the bike is still under it's extended warranty so I'll get the dealer to put in a new stator and then get the rotor from EBR. Makes sense once someone explains it. Do you see why I don't do my own work? : D

Matter of experience get tools, stands and manuals, start small work carefully, Build on your knowledge step by step
These bikes are well thought out and not too hard to work on, you have us as a resource

the rotor is held on with a NON-REUSABLE NUT that needs 300 ft. lbs torque. Make sure the dealer does the proper torque because 300 ft. lbs. is a new value.

Dealer confirmed the stator is gone. Interesting that I offered to get the EBR rotor to replace the existing one and was told that it would void the extended warranty if I did. I'm sure they mean just the parts that cover the electrical system as voiding everything would be a bit heavy handed, even for HD. Anyone try replace the rotor with EBR's and didn't have the extended warranty voided because of it?

Mine died on the way into work. same symptoms - CE light and Batt light. 11.7-12.5 all the way in. Hope it will start so i can limp it to the dealer (extended warr to the rescue).

it's gorgeous of course, so w/o bike for who knows how long. Dealer won't order part until they do diags. GRR!

They cannot void your entire warranty for installing the EBR rotor. They can't even exclude electrical coverage unless they can prove that the rotor was the cause of any electrical problem you experience after you install it. Have a look at the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This short article sums it up nicely:
