Just picked up a 2008 1125r had been sitting for a long time. I got it running and it has some very audible whiring noise coming from what sounds like the ignition cover. Bike had been in a light wreck before and has 25k miles has only run 2x in the last 2 years.

Noise doesn't seem to happen at idle but it increases with revs and over powers the exhaust.

I took the ignition cover off and everything looks to be alright. Anyone have any ideas? What kind of problems do 20-30mile bikes see?

with the rotor cover off you will see a couple of gears above and behind the rotor.
what colour are they? some of these balance gears eat themselves.

I'd start with the clutch. Make sure clutch plates and fibers are in spec. Check the clutch fluid.

Its on the ignition side for sure, not clutch side. I had the cover off, I dont remember exactly but I do think they were dark. The sound its making does sound like gear related noises now that I think about it.

Sucks. This is common?

My bike makes a whirring noise at high rpm but I think that is a performance by product. It sounds just like the GP bikes if you ever heard them live at the track.

Sucks. This is common?
Not terribly
not like the slave cylinder
or the alternator

being that its a heat treatment issue
its likely that a few more turn up.

The gear sound is very distinct over the normal noise of the engine. To me it kind of sounds like a chain slapping around inside the crankcase. Or a bunch of metal shards getting tossed around.

it does look like it's got hot in parts! but hard to say for sure, need to see more of it.

but you might have caught it early.

I'd bite the bullet and get the rotor off.

I think I am having this issue now with my 2010 motor that has 4500 miles on it. I have the rotor off and they look black in color. I'm trying to find in the book how to get the gears off with no luck. I have it lined up right and tried to slide it off no luck. Any idea how to get those gears off?

I take it you've got the rotor off yes?

Camchain has to be removed from rear cylinder then the drive gear can be pulled off the crank.

It will need a puller though,it seems the heat makes them real tight on the crank- unlike the rotor.

Is it possible to pull the camchain the way the motor is now? That being the rotor off? Or is there a lot more involved to get the camchain off?

Also how hard is it to get back on?

Dean,do you really want to find out? My gears are much worse than yours and the motor appears ok,but who knows. I guess I'll find out on the drag strip.

Russ,If you don't understand what you need to do,to remove the camchain ,then you should probably leave it alone.

Ok smart ass I was just asking because these bikes are a little different when it comes to mechanical things. Like calling for an engine rotation to change spark plugs when you can do it without rotating. I figured the motor either has to be rotated or pulled to get the cam chain but figured I'd ask first.

For the record, I replaced the "puck" at the end of the ignition cover and put a new rubber seal and the noise is gone... Incase anyone was wondering.

My gears are only discolored on 3-4 teeth, and the noise is now gone... do I really need to worry about this? They dont seem TOO Warn, unless someone can see in my picture it is a bigger problem then I know of.
